Finance Minister Nicola Willis says the downgrade of New Zealand’s fiscal outlook from “stable” to “negative” by credit agency Moody’s is “another warning that we can’t afford to simply spend more and borrow more”, and validates the Government’s approach. Moody’s announced the downgrade on Thursday, pointing to persistent inflation and global uncertainty. While it affirmed the Government’s long-term issuer rating at the top-tier AAA level, the trajectory for the country’s finances now faced increased risks.

Real GDP per Capita growth since around 1983. The graph is mostly above the "0" line. The biggest negative was 2020 (Covid), followed by an even bigger spike in recovery.
