A one-day interdisciplinary symposium exploring how contemporary extremism operates through the aesthetics and participatory cultures of postdigital media. Bringing together researchers, artists, designers and policy experts to examine conspiracy culture, influencer ideology and the gamification of politics through panels, workshops and installations.
This could, on an objective basis, fairly be described as bullying. It was asymmetrical. Mr Miller and Ms Power found Mr Turner’s views offensive, and his labelling of them personally offensive, but he did not express himself in an offensive manner. They considered his viewpoint unreasonable, but he expressed it moderately, rationally and on a reasoned basis, with a view to engagement and eliciting answers to questions or challenges. As already noted, Mr Turner’s side of the interactions is recognisable as an exercise in ‘calling out’ – that is, an exercise in labelling Mr Miller’s and Ms Power’s words and deeds (and others’), on the basis of what is entirely apparent was his genuine and articulated belief that they merited those labels. Their response was to attack him. They did so persistently. (I observed a little of the flavour of this myself in their conduct of this litigation, in their oral evidence, and in the choices made, presumably on instruction, about the cross-examination of Mr Turner. He responded, and assisted the court, with presence of mind and composure.)

Letter from Patron Law's Mark Lewis to my solicitors: "There is no third-party funding the litigation. Our client is entitled to borrow funds in order to pursue litigation and to defend those claims brought against her. You are not entitled to go behind privilege to determine why we and counsel have indicated that we are no longer prepared to act under a CFA, whether it is due to the merits of her case, or your client’s counterclaim, or simply a recognition that your client might not have sufficient funds to meet a costs order, is a matter between us and our client."
Because Mr Lewis was acting on CFAs at this stage, it appears that he and Patron Law were not charging their clients who dabbled in anti-semitism. And the only way Mr Lewis could get paid was if the Jewish person they had bullied either: gave in by settling their claims; or lost at trial. Unless their fascist-curious clients won, Mr Lewis and Patron Law were effectively acting for them for free. This position changed, though, on 9 March 2023 when a further notice of funding form was filed at court which showed that Ms Power’s CFA had been terminated. Although Ms Power’s CFA with Patron Law ended, Mr Miller’s continued. There is a bit to unravel here, and the starting point is that Mr Ben Delo, the billionaire who co-founded BitMEX, a crypto-currency exchange and trading platform applied to register a charge on Ms Power’s house and then around £350k was paid to Patron Law in March 2023 towards Ms Power’s costs in the litigation.

Analysis and Findings 19. A significant amount of material has been placed before me. It is not necessary for findings to be made in respect of every aspect of it. The following has been established from the material that it before me, including the material contained within the “Supplemental Bundle”: a) Disclosure by the CAA following the court’s orders for disclosure were: tweets to be found from p155 of the supplementary Bundle; An example of Mr Silverman’s letter (see below);confirmation that Mark Lewis was aa patron of CAA in 2018, who continues to provide advice to it. The remaining disclosure followed research on behalf of RH. b) The CAA was formed by Mandy Blumental, who is a member of its’ committee. c) Mark Lewis was a patron of the CAA and has provided legal advice to it. d) Mark Lewis and Mandy Blumental were the individuals described in the application for the summons as “A British Israeli couple”. I find the failure to identify them and their close association with the prosecutor as significant. The wording of the summary misled me into believing that there was no such association, I am satisfied that this was intentional. e) Mark Lewis was fined by the Solicitors’ regulatory Authority on 13 December 2018. This was not disclosed at any point by the prosecutor. Since he was one of those present at the Fringe show, who objected to the joke, and subsequently disrupted the performance, it should have been. f) There is a report of Mark Lewis being criticised by Nicklin J on the basis he had “put evidence before the Court, on an ex parte application, that was not true” (p140 of the Supplementary Bundle)- although it should be noted that the judge did not find that he had knowingly misled the court. The judge reportedly stated that there had been a “significant failure” by Lewis to comply with the general obligation of full and frank disclosure (Mr Lawlor conceded that Mr Lewis had been criticised albeit in the course of a property dispute). The second case is Miller and Power v Turner [2023] EWHC 2799 (KB), where Mr Lewis acted for the claimants Daniel Miller and Nina Power in their defamation claim against Luke Turner. The case went to trial and Mr Lewis’ clients lost. What seems clear about this case is that the chances of Mr Miller and Ms Power succeeding at trial were very low. Mr Turner had made various statements about Mr Miller and Ms Power, including that they were fascists and neo-Nazis who had engaged in a campaign of harassment against him. Bizarrely, Mr Miller and Ms Power chose not to contest that they were fascists or neo-Nazis, but claimed their reputations had been harmed by the allegations of harassment. Given they had expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler, defending the fascism allegations would have been problematic to say the least. It seems unlikely that additional damage to their reputation was caused by the accusation of harassment on top of the accusation of being fascists? This seems to be the basis on which Mr Miller and Ms Power lost at trial.

Exit is billed as a participant in Wagon Box’s CCR event, which will include other far-right publishers , along with Murphy’s Other Life and hard-right online magazine IM-1776. The Guardian previously reported on IM-1776’s support of authoritarian leaders such as Vladimir Putin and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele; its enthusiasm for extremist political figures such as Gabriele D’Annunzio and Kaczynski; and its close links with contemporary hard-right activists like the culture warrior Christopher Rufo, Erik Prince and would-be “warlord” Charles Haywood. IM-1776’s literary editor, Daniel Miller, is a speaker at DitW, and in YouTube videos posted to Wagon Box’s channel he is characterized as a writer-in-residence. In a January article for IM-1776, Miller called for Donald Trump to overthrow the government of the UK led by Keir Starmer and “liberate” the country, saying it was run by “a criminal regime” dominated by “a mafia-like organization of pathological personalities”, a necessity “as clear as the imperative of the Vietnamese to invade Cambodia and remove the Khmer Rouge from power in 1979”. Miller did not respond to a request for comment.

"I did, however, have broader concerns around the material provided and around the threat posed by white supremacism and the alt-right. For example, I recall a particularly disturbing tweet by the @DCGroyper account referring to "dashing down into the street, pistol in hand and firing blindly, as fast as you can pull the trigger, into the crowd". Any kind of comment about shooting people in the street is obviously a highly concerning thing to read. I was also particularly mindful that there had been quite a few high-profile terrorist attacks and lone shooter events around this time, particularly in the United States. I therefore considered that it would be sensible to prepare an intelligence report to ensure that the DCXTV Account and Havas Account were appropriately monitored, and that the material posted under those accounts would be distributed within the MPS. The purpose of this intelligence report was to document the material that was being posted by the DCXTV Account and Havas Account in case they happened to already be under investigation by another police department. I created the report in mid-December 2018 but do not know what happened with it thereafter. As I believe I would have told Mr Turner at the time, ordinarily intelligence reports would be reviewed by a supervisor within the MPS's Intelligence Department. They would then be disseminated to other relevant department(s) within the MPS, which would include the Counter-Terrorism department, as the supervisor considered necessary."

To end, we would like to return to another trope repeatedly brought up in discourses on the new and old right. It is a question, so to speak, about the (new?) aesthetics of the new right. Is there a relation between the new right and the idea that fascism effectuates an aestheticization of politics? On the culturally aspirational fringes of the far Right (from Bronze Age Pervert to fashwave) there are some desultory efforts at aestheticization that don’t exactly compete with Jünger, Marinetti or Mishima, to put it all too mildly. In this arena especially, I think late fascism reveals itself as a pathetic but not innocuous pastiche of its forerunner.

Power posted esoteric images, literary quotations, angry denunciations of the so-called ‘gender/trans cult’, as well as a doctored photograph of Judith Butler, portraying this queer Jewish philosopher as a rainbow-painted lizard-person. Power’s Gorsedd account also reposted a piece she co-wrote anonymously for the far-right blog Parallax Optics: this featured more anti-trans invective, and appeared alongside an article on ‘race-realism’ which came to the conclusion that ‘sub-Saharans…just aren’t very smart’. Compact has since accepted Power’s resignation as editor, given this and the arguably more damaging release of her ‘ironic and humorous’ WhatsApp messages about Mein Kampf. Power, for her part, remains unapologetic: she’s gone out of her way to defend Parallax Optics as being ‘in no way “neo-Nazi”’, despite a more recent article on the site which encircles the names of Jewish people and supposedly Jewish concepts within antisemitic triple-brackets.
