Today's parents are of the generation who grew up with this version of the web before the big social media sites took over, and frankly they have no excuse and need to do better. It is not hard to set up parental controls on a phone or tablet, and these devices are not toys.
The big social media platforms aren't great. Indeed they're absolutely awful in many ways, but they're just the tip of the iceberg and there is far far worse out there which is either out of scope of this legislation, or non-UK based and willing to ignore it
What this law is doing is the equivalent of making it illegal for kids to ride their bicycles in the street outside their house, but it's completely OK to go and ride them on the motorway instead!
If you really care about protecting children, you need to compel schools and parents to supervise their children's online activities, and those who fail to do so should be charged with neglect the same as we would with parents who allow their kids to play on the motorway!
This law also harms over 16s and puts everybody at risk. In this day and age data breaches are commonplace. It is not a matter of IF the records of your government ID get leaked to the dark web, it is a matter of WHEN. Anybody with even the slightest knowledge of infosec knows this. The age old advice of "Never tell anybody online you real name or where you live" was wise, and is still correct, albeit the bare minimum!
All that said, lets not lose sight of what this is really about. It isn't about protecting children, it never was, it's about tying your government ID to the use of social media so that this increasingly authoritarian shithole of a country can prosecute adults if you say things that this government doesn't like!
That's what it's all about.
It was never about the children.

The under 16s social media ban is a classic example of security theatre. It will achieve the opposite of its stated goals, and will endanger everybody, adults and children alike.
Reasonably legal, reasonably legitimate sites like Facebook and Reddit will comply. Smaller sites, and large sites of a more dubious nature are either out of scope will ignore it.
I write this as a Xennial who first got internet access aged 17 (via the college I was at), I remember what the internet was like before the big social media sites, the internet that we're now pushing kids into. Sure there was some really cool stuff, I learned interesting history, got to compare life experiences with people from other countries, and I made lifelong friends there. I was also tricked into looking at a man's distended anus on multiple occasions, played really messed up Flash games such as a school shooting simulator, browsed a website that was pretty much entirely gore porn. I also used to ERP with randos in chat rooms who may have been around my own age, or they may have been nonces, who knew?
None of the sites I just described are in scope for this legislation, many of them still exist. Some of them are even worse now than they were back when I was on them.
I don't blame my parents for any of this. My parents grew up without computers or internet, it was a completely new thing, and had I been a few years younger the story would likely have played out the same, indeed quite a few millennials I know joke about having watched that beheading video when they were 13. Most millennials can probably name exactly which three websites I was describing just from the short descriptions I gave!
