COMPUTERS & SOFTWARE HAND-HELD SYSTEMS APPLE'S NEWTON READY FOR LAUNCH A pple Computer's long-awaited Newton finally appears ready to fall from the tree. The company demonstrated a near-final prototype for POPULAR SCIENCE recently and said its "personal digital assistant" (or PDA) device should be available sometime this summer for "well below $1,000." Newton, first shown about a year ago ["Your World Accord-ing to Newton," Sept. '92], is a paperback-size computer with a small LCD, but no key-board. The first Newton model is expected to employ a solid-state "flash" memory card for storage and an internal modem for sending data and faxes though both may be option-al. At our preview, Newton con-verted cursive handwriting to text and a hand-scrawled arrow to a neatly drawn graphic. You can jot handwritten notes on the screen in what an Apple product manager called "an in-finite roll of paper." Among the soft-ware that will be available for New-ton is Docker, a personal organizer and file-transfer utility developed by Traveling Soft ware. Docker will also be avail able for desktop PCs, enabling you to swap information with a Macintosh or systems running DOS or Windows. Several more advanced Newton mod-els will be available within a year after the initial version, ac-cording to Apple, and kits for upgrading early Newtons will be offered. Vortex Magazine: What's your one biggest Doctor Who memory? Tom Baker: I remember a man stopping me in Oxford Street once, looking at me with absolute incredulity; he couldn't believe it. He said, 'Tom Baker?' A man in his late thirties. I said, 'Yes'. He said, 'Tom Baker?' I said, 'Yes!' And he looked at me and in his brain he catapulted back in time and he said, 'You know, when I was a boy, I was in a home for children; nobody wanted us, you know? It was terrible. And you made Saturday night good.' And I went to say something to him and I could see him so close to tears that he couldn't speak. Such a common thing, isn't it, but suddenly backed up with an expression on his face through his tears that was a knighthood. It was a knighthood. Just thumbs up, meaning it was great, and thanks. It's incredible, isn't it? Just a gesture.
