This guy. This would have been 79 today, had he survived leukemia, a broken leg and both wrists, gangrene (in his leg), and a bone marrow transplant that wiped out his white blood cells, allowing the gangrene to spread. Alas, he died at 43… I was only 14. I took this pic with his camera when I was about 10ish in an airport in Puerto Rico (my first portrait!). When he died, my mum confiscated this picture, and wouldn’t hand it over until I was over 45 years old (the last time I saw her, before going no contact, weirdly enough). Being that it was not digital, I couldn’t do anything. I tried to fight for it, but she wasn’t budging (at one point she even tried to convince me I didn’t take it- gaslighting 101). I’m not sure what made her change her mind, finally, but I’m glad to have an image of my dad- the only one I have. I missed out on having a dad. Though honestly I really never got to know him- he much preferred spending time with my older brother, so my time with him was limited, and in very short spurts, and riddled with annoyance for my being too sensitive, not very intelligent (he had a genius level IQ- probably helpful when he invented the POS system, and I suck at math, and anything computer adjacent), so very young, and an invalid (which can be annoying to remember and accommodate when you’re perfectly healthy). He loved the ocean, and sailing though- something we have in common even now- which is part of the reason I live in Sarasota now. Anywho… at least he isn’t around to tell me what a massive disappointment I am as a human being any more. Happy Birthday, Dad

when I was in college I heard of some artists that would be so tormented by a piece that even though they had put it in the gallery, and it had sold, and now was hanging in some strangers house… The artist would be hunted by that piece because to them it had left their hands before they were done with it. They would find out who bought the painting, and sneak into their house in the middle of the night to continue to work on the painting because it was haunting them so terribly. I feel like those artists right now, because I’m reposting this bloody thing after sitting on it for days and editing and re-editing and re-re-editing in Lightroom. The damn thing has a potential and it’s trying to say something powerful and my editing skills are really getting tested right about now…. Honestly, I think this edition came out a bit too bright, and it looks different on one screen than it does another, but I like it better than the first one I posted (which was too dark and didn’t have enough contrast)… so there’s that. I hope somebody notices the difference and likes this one more… Cause if not, I’m gonna feel like a fucking fool, and that feeling is just coming entirely too easily these days.
OK, so I know I used this quote for another photograph just a few hours ago – which has now been deleted because… As I was leaving the house to go run errands I saw that my first Stokes Aster has bloomed in my garden. So of course I quickly retrieved my camera from over my shoulder (never leave home w/I it😉), and snapped a few shots of this beauty. Understandably, I then I had to run back inside and edit and erase the other post, and repost with this crazy-looking, Gorgeous flower that makes the quote… just make sense. Sorry, not sorry?😏
