From a business case, the open source runtime itself never was going to make money. But yes, from an ecosystem point of view, that's definitely the most significant development. Arguably, they never tried to standardize a lot of APIs though, like Deno/Bun.serve. Perhaps WinterTC wasn't interested?

I think Deno's biggest problem (was/is) that it started out with not explicit goal of Node compatibility. This meant that it didn't get such traction. However bun started with goal of node compatiblity and got more traction because of it. Although bun too was no very profitable and got acqhuired.
