What happens when a World Cup knockout match ends tied? When a knockout stage match is tied at the end of 90 minutes plus stoppage time, the match goes to extra time. That means the teams will play at least 30 more minutes, which are split into two halves of 15 minutes each. The teams switch sides at the midway point. There is also stoppage time as needed. If one team has scored more goals than the other in extra time, they are the winners and will advance. If the match is still tied at the end of extra time, the game turns to penalty kicks. Each team takes five kicks with a different player each round. Whichever side scores the most penalties wins. If the teams are tied after five penalty kicks each, then the tiebreaker goes to sudden death. The teams continue taking turns shooting until one team scores and the other misses. Only players who are on the field at the conclusion of extra time are eligible to take penalties. If the shootout goes beyond 11 rounds, then the order of takers restarts.
