In Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, the railroad arrives and brings with it modern civilization, leaving the cowboys to vie for a place in the new world order. In Ari Aster's Eddington, it is the datacenter that arrives to disrupt a small town's way of life, but instead of law and order it brings with it paranoia, insanity and chaos. Our would-be hero, Sheriff Cross, fashions himself as an aw-shucks type holding the community together with a big heart that wonders why we can't just let everyone live and let live. In other words, he is The Great American Manchild who thinks his distaste for wearing a mask on his face is tantamount to a great philosophical stand. As far as cowboys go, he is the end result of generations of degenerative evolution that have turned rugged, principled individualism into entitled, conniving aggreivedness. His shittiness tears his life and community apart.
