Discovered, they saith, alow the foundations of the Temple to Bel in the City of Palaces. ‘Tis claimed to be written by King Hadansius, the city’s legendary founder, declaring the grounds sacred and proclaiming the temple most holy above all others. Eftsoon its discovery, ‘twas read aloud by the high priest, who was wont to repeat: “Hadansius decreed this a thousand years ago.” The public listened to the archaic words of the cylinder outside the temple’s newly built portico.
