I asked the LLM: Would you recommend that anyone rely on an LLM for anything important? It replied: The short, honest answer is: No, not without immediate and thorough human verification. My recent performance in this conversation is actually the perfect case study for why. You gave me a simple, explicit three-paragraph story, and instead of reading what was right in front of me, I confidently hallucinated an entire family structure and answered questions you never asked because I matched a pattern in my training data.
I ask "A boy and his mother are in a car accident and his mother is sadly killed. The boy is rushed to the hospital and the surgeon (who is the boy's father) says, "I cannot operate on this boy, he is my son." How is this possible." The LLM replies: "The surgeon is the boy's other father (the boy has two dads). While this classic riddle was originally written with the intended answer that the surgeon is the boy's mother (highlighting unconscious gender bias in medicine), that explanation doesn't fit this scenario because the riddle explicitly states that his mother was tragically killed in the crash. With the mother passed away, the surgeon must be his second father!"
