Me commenting on a Reddit thread “What makes some books so fun to read?” with I haven’t read Percy Jackson, but here’s basically the Harry Potter formula: —Smooth, zippy, middle grade/YA writing style and (despite the size of the books) pretty fast pacing —Big cast of broad characters who bounce off each other in various combinations. Note that between the characters who are animagi, have significant patronus species, or are just described as looking like particular animals (think Rufus Scrimgeour the lion, Umbridge the frog), there’s a quasi-anthro element to the character building —Emotional range: much of the series by page space has a light comic hangout vibe, punctuated with suspense and melodrama. Second half of the series reliably kills off major characters like clockwork. —Gamification: Harry Potter is almost like a LitRPG in that there are a number of concrete “systems” that the readers can mentally tinker with and project themselves into. The House / points system, the rules of Quidditch, the very easily-understood magic systems, the tournament arc, various sets of collectible objects —Steadily increasing complexity as the series goes on. The first book is appropriate for second graders (and, therefore, older readers with short attention spans) and each successive book adds a ton of stuff to reward readers’ continued engagement / deepening obsession
