Here is the breakdown of why four readings are necessary: -Three Satellites for Position (x, y, z): In 3D space, one satellite narrows your position to a sphere, two to a circle, and three to two intersecting points. One of these points is usually impossible (e.g., in space), leaving one valid location. -The 4th Satellite for Time Sync (1): GPS calculates distance based on time delay (distance = speed time). Because the phone's clock is not as accurate as the atomic clocks on satellites, a fourth satellite is required to solve for the time difference (offset) between the phone and the satellites. Without the 4th, Errors Occur: If the phone used only three satellites, the timing error would translate into huge positioning inaccuracies, as light travels nearly 300,000 kilometers per second.
