Simon Legree had bought him to groom him as an overseer (ie. collaborator) over other slaves, and Tom’s spirituality refused. The “loyalty” he had to white owners were to the household owner he had served since a boy, and later sold to Little Eva’s father, whom he offered Biblical comfort to.
