This satellite image provided by Maxar Technologies shows the Eaton Fire on Wed., Jan. 8, 2025, in Altadena, Calif. Maxar Technologies via AP About 80% of photo frame is urban developed area, with mountainous terrain to the tip and right, in muted greys and blues. The urban area is dark to black with grid pattern of streets clearly visible. By far the most prominent visible element however are the red orange yellow glowing embers of burning structures across 80 or 90 percent of the developed area. Visually beautiful, stunning, turning to stomach dropping horror as the implications sink in. These were people's homes. Next to the ocean, a vast source of water. The solid black bite out of bottom left of image is ocean. Look at the image longer, it becomes an open maw, with the three black splotches above as eyes and nose. Is it monstrous roaring, devouring? or wailing, crying? Either and both.
