Toll and his companions had marched into the polar night and vanished. If Sannikov Land was ever real, then it too may have been lost to the Arctic Ocean. The permafrost-rich Semyonovsky Island nearby was melted and eroded completely by the 1960s, from an initial extent of 4.6 km2 in 1823.
