Little late to the party, but my wife had to explain this to me when I questioned her interest in Mafia Romance Books featuring murderous gangsters as love interests. To summarize, "When you're raised by monsters, the fantasy is to be loved and protected by an even bigger monster. The more dangerous the monster is, the more safe you are." People that come from abusive situations may seek out monstrosity both because they relate to the isolation and "otherness" of the monster, but also as protection from the monsters that abused them. In some cases there's a certain catharsis when the monstrous love interest exacts vengeance on the victim's behalf. My wife isn't into actual "monster" stuff, but I can imagine some overlap between those themes.
