Why We Sign - Paul DeSilva Jan 25, 2019 I was recently having a conversation with someone somewhat new to Old School and he was asking about how best to build an Old School community in his area and tips for running tournaments. At one point in our conversation, he asked “So what’s the deal with that whole signing cards thing?” For the uninitiated, it’s become fairly commonplace, and almost expected, that when you attend an Old School tournament, you bring a card with you that goes into a community prize pool. The card’s value doesn’t necessarily matter; emphasis is put on playability. I’ve seen everything thrown in from a Revised Drudge Skeletons to an Unlimited Sol Ring. Everybody who enters contributes a card and everybody who enters signs every card that was contributed. At the end of the tournament, these cards get drafted from the winner on down the list. This ensures that everybody leaves with something by which to remember the tournament and ideally to jam in their decks. So, the short answer to the question above might be simply “A memento.”
Minnesota Department of Corrections Statement on Minneapolis Shooting and Federal Claims January 24, 2026 The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Alex Pretti, who was shot and killed by federal agents this morning in Minneapolis. The loss of life is tragic, and Minnesotans deserve transparency, accountability, and facts. In the hours following the shooting, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino held a press conference asserting that the operation was targeting an individual named Jose Huerta-Chuma and characterized him as having a significant criminal history. Because federal statements have repeatedly included inaccurate information about Minnesota custody and criminal records, the DOC reviewed available records to determine whether the individual referenced had any connection to Minnesota state prison custody.
Following the news of yet another fatal shooting in Minneapolis, a city that has been on the forefront of the fight against injustices, NBA players can no longer remain silent. Now more than ever, we must defend the right to freedom of speech and stand in solidarity with the people in Minnesota protesting and risking their lives to demand justice. The fraternity of NBA players, like the United States itself, is a community enriched by its global citizens, and we refuse to let the flames of division threaten the civil liberties that are meant to protect us all. The NBPA and its members extend our deepest condolences to the families of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, just as our thoughts remain focused on the safety and well-being of all members of our community.
The business community in Minnesota prides itself in providing leadership and solving problems to ensure a strong and vibrant state. The recent challenges facing our state have created widespread disruption and tragic loss of life. For the past several weeks, representatives of Minnesota’s business community have been working every day behind the scenes with federal, state and local officials to advance real solutions. These efforts have included close communication with the Governor, the White House, the Vice President and local mayors. There are ways for us to come together to foster progress. With yesterday’s tragic news, we are calling for an immediate deescalation of tensions and for state, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions. We have been working for generations to build a strong and vibrant state here in Minnesota and will do so in the months and years ahead with equal and even greater commitment. In this difficult moment for our community, we call for peace and focused cooperation among local, state and federal leaders to achieve a swift and durable solution that enables families, businesses, our employees, and communities across Minnesota to resume our work to build a bright and prosperous future.
News Room Statement from Secretary Simon January 25, 2026 SAINT PAUL – On January 24, 2026, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz with three requests that she writes would "restore the rule of law, support ICE officers, and bring an end to the chaos in Minnesota.” The third request in the letter was to allow the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to access Minnesota’s “voter rolls.” The letter was sent on the same day a second Minnesotan was shot and killed by federal immigration enforcement agents - and the day after tens of thousands of Minnesotans peacefully marched in sub-zero temperatures for an end to the federal occupation.
