Hope lies like the edge of a teaspoon, upward facing, a thickness perhaps enough solidness to knife through a banana or other soft fruit for safety for a baby or to get under the edge of the surface tension of the skin of a grape to start a peel. Perhaps enough boldness to lever the metal lid off the treacle for tarts or the mini figurines enamel paint pots or that tap root of your favourite weed for a move to safety. Perhaps enough cheek to plunge unembarrassed deep into the Nutella pot for a mouthful of pleasure, thick and sweet or seek the bottom of the ice cream tub lap cradled, for Pride & Prejudice again. Perhaps enough crucible to cradle nettles or rose buds to boil dead, to trace around to sketch a face on paper, or to measure the exact alchemy needed to rise.

I had mentioned that girls are a gift from nature / tamed until made to forget ourselves / repetition, rite, rules // The northerly-wind was livid that day / trees aggressed twigs and leaves shattered to the ground // chairs spewed across over-manicured lawns where insects once drank ate fandangoed // the window at the end of the corridor torn-wide from its resting place / liberated the house to breathe // all those papers tornadoed out / lined the street for hopscotch and scribbles // the kitchen my Gods the kitchen it glistened / every surface shone with the pressure wash of rain // the deluge of waterfalling teacups and cake-forks burst-open the doors // boats from that tornado-paper could not did not resist the tumult / made shape for the sea // after miles of gutter-fun the slop the splurge of corralling tide / banked corners drowned hydrangeas / racing and laughing at the momentum of outpouring it gently gently returned us to the sea // we waved / with nails-bitten / a wild and delirious goodbye. Marcelle Newbold, ‘at the edge of the mist’ poem. At the edge of the mist I find a boat, two oars & a chocolate bar. I know you are here — the weather dictates. The boat hull knocks at the shore, rhythms at my door, and I of course accept. The seat’s still warm. Will you sit beside me? Or shall I row out to find you? I am still, alone. Chocolate bar nibble, your favourite, the crinkle of silver foil stirs the mist. After a while it is time — the morning alarm rings. I do not want to leave, although I do, as all good daughters do, leaving you a blanket to warm against the chill.

Not every thing wants to be an image, contained, emotion recalled. This stanza swells for the now of a paragraph— those long sentences revealing slow their worlds, their acts & scenes, obstacle after obstacle overcome together. Multiple climaxes. This wants for a voyage, the taste of discovery, volume after volume of devotion. Marcelle Newbold

Treason I ignite a candle with an extra long safety match, from a wipe clean box, stored high out of reach. A flame flickers perfume of gunpowder, the promise of anarchy, hiss of an instant, intoxicating domestic air all too briefly naked, naturally dangerous controlled only by breath, and dust.
