Eno: Action games are tough. There are so many invisible elements. Actually, there's one thing I want to demystify today. Take the jump in 2D Mario games. Other companies' Mario-like games usually have you jump along a fixed trajectory or a simple quadratic curve. But with Mario's jump, if you hold the A button down past a certain duration, it feels like you get a slight extra bit of distance at the very end, almost like a special bonus. It feels as if a separate jumping equation kicks in and pushes Mario horizontally. Miyamoto: We don't actually do that. What happens is that the moment you release the button, we increase the gravity slightly. Because of that, the trajectory feels different depending on whether you hold the A button to the very end or let go halfway through. You're looking at it very closely, though.

I used to leave my Famicom turned on for so long playing Super Mario Bros. 3 that the console would overheat. But I just haven't been able to get into Mario 64. My wife won't play it either. I kept wondering why that was, but when I first tried Mario 64 at the Shoshinkai show, I felt this incredible sense of freedom in its world. You could get carried away by a bird, run through a field of flowers and be startled by butterflies, plunge down a waterfall, or fly through the sky. It felt like you could just mess around aimlessly, and anyone who wanted to dive deeper could master it. But with the final retail version, I felt like I had suddenly joined a really strict after-school sports club. I found myself unable to get into the mindset of meticulously reading every signpost or trying to collect dozens of stars. To me, Mario 64 was supposed to be about a very loose, free atmosphere. When I first saw Super Mario Bros., it blew my mind. There was this mustachioed middle-aged guy, pipes, mountains, sky, ground, and blocks. I was a Namco fan who preferred Pac-Man, so it was completely unexpected. But on the N64, Princess Peach and Bowser have become so realistic, and her getting kidnapped and needing help feels so real that I can't just relax and enjoy it. It's like a yonkoma (four-panel comic) strip suddenly turned into a gritty graphic novel. I always thought of you, Miyamoto-san, as someone who draws a lot of high-quality four-panel comics. I wanted to hear your thoughts on that."

Sega-16: You were only at Sega this time for for a couple years. Why did you leave? Mike Fischer: I was there there to basically put the Dreamcast to bed, but my real my real task was to shift Sega over from a first party to a third party. A big part of that was rebuilding the relationships with Nintendo and PlayStation and then forging the relationship with Xbox. It was tough all around, and I think credit goes to both Sony and Nintendo. Andy House was Vice-President of Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) at that time, and Peter had run some trade ads kind of making fun of the PlayStation shortage. I remember Andy calling me because I’ve known him from my Namco days, and he’s just yelling at me. He’s like, “This is not professional! We’re gentlemen in this industry! This is not how we treat each other.!” I had to call Andy back and say, “Listen, man. We have no money to market these games, you know? Can you help us out?” And he did. He gave us a million dollars of TV advertising for Virtua Fighter. The sweetest thing was we we brought the the Sonic the Hedgehog mascot character up to Nintendo, and the Mario mascot character was there at the door of Nintendo of America and gave him a hug and welcomed him in. I think Arakawa-san from Nintendo of America was there. I’m not going to lie, I got a little teary-eyed when I saw that happen. It was really sweet. Of course, the Xbox guys danced from day one.

Did you ever plan to give Pocket Tales a GB Color palette, or were you just too far into development at the time of the hardware's release? 2. I remember when news of Rare's defection from Nintendo to solo-publishing was all the rave; It was sometimes assumed that Rare did this to be able to design games for Sony's PSX. Are there or were there ever plans to make a game for the CD-based system, and if not, any input on why the N64 is favored to develop on? (Sometimes I just think the PSX has been around waaaay too long.) 3. Can I clean your toilets for money, or at least a chance to see the Rare pad from the inside? 4. Phil readily takes credit for the name: “And I noticed you asked a question about Oogtar, which is interesting cause he seems to be universally hated… Well, I came up with a name. I’m happy to admit.” The character’s creation, however, stemmed from a directive from DiC president Andy Heyward. The idea was to create a mischievous foil for Yoshi, pushing the gentle dinosaur into comical predicaments. Phil elaborated on the rationale behind Oogtar: “Andy felt okay, we got this great character, Yoshi’s like this little kid, and Mario and Luigi have to take care of him and blah. But he felt we couldn’t make Yoshi ever do anything too bad… he thought that would be great fun if he had a little buddy who is always pushing the envelope and getting Yoshi into big trouble… So Oogtar was always gonna be the bad guy no matter what… and that was the idea to begin with.” While Oogtar might have been designed to be an obnoxious character, Phil mused that the writers might have “took it a little too far, making him too obnoxious.” Yet, he offered a humorous perspective on characters who elicit strong negative reactions: “You know that you’ve done a successful show, if somebody in that show, or one character is hated by everybody. That’s a success.”"
