We’re halfway through 2026, and this year, much like in years past, great books have somehow managed to come into the world despite so many obstacles including low wages for (most) writers and corporate consolidation (I will call myself out by saying that three out of the six books on this list are published by imprints of Penguin Random House, and that’s really not great). My goal for the latter part of the year is to read more diversely by publisher. But in the meantime here are my favorites so far from 2026.
Gilbert Cruz Departs 'NYTBR' for New 'NYT' Role Jun 05, 2026 Gilbert Cruz, who has led the New York Times Book Review since 2022, will step down from the paper's book section to take on the newly created role of "canon editor," in which he will lead a new department tasked with developing "canon and signature lists," according to an announcement by Times executive editor Joe Kahn and managing editors Marc Lacey and Carolyn Ryan. The canon team, the trio said, will be "dedicated to expanding our embrace of those moments when we invite experts and readers alike to help us declare the definitive works in a given discipline." The announcement lauded Cruz as "the first to realize the potential in creating definitive catalogs of culture when he and the Books desk published the '100 Best Books of the 21st Century' package in collaboration with The Upshot two years ago." This is a "Mood Trap." Your content is vital, but it is heavy just like real politics but your platform is built on charm and intimacy. The Amazon algorithm sees a 3.9 rating and assumes that readers do not want a "sad" read. The book is failing the "Vibe Check" test with your core demographic.

Yesterday afternoon I was sitting at a small café table near the window, the kind of place where everyone pretends to be working while secretly people-watching instead. A guy at the next table was having a full conversation with his dog, explaining why the croissant wasn’t “for sharing,” which honestly made the whole place feel more human than productive. While I was there trying to finish a few notes, I picked up my phone for a quick break, and that’s when I came across I Want to Burn This Place Down. I meant to skim the description for a moment, but the title alone made me pause, and before long I was reading about the journey behind the essays.

In 2001, he made up parts of an interview with the R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe because he found him boring in real life. Some journalists and media critics felt Mr. Junod had crossed the line. He reveled in the controversy.

The premise alone was enough to move it to the top of my to-read list.
