Evidence of Bias There are several legitimate concerns: Advocacy framing. The paper is explicitly prescriptive — the authors state upfront they want to influence policy. This is unusual for a scientific review and colors how evidence is selected and presented. Contradictory findings (e.g., on traffic accidents) are acknowledged but given much less weight than supportive ones. Conflict of interest in data. Lead author Till Roenneberg (TR) personally curates the MCTQ database, which is the primary data source for several of the paper's key figures and analyses. This is disclosed, but it means the main evidence comes from a dataset the lead author controls, with limited independent replication. Self-citation. A notable proportion of the references are to Roenneberg's own prior work, which is common in specialist fields but worth noting given the advocacy tone. Cherry-picking counterarguments. The "fallacies" section is structured around critiquing a single university press release from Salzburg, which is a relatively weak target. Stronger pro-DST or pro-perennial-DST scientific arguments are not fully engaged with. One-sided conclusion on chronic effects. The authors acknowledge that evidence for chronic DST harms is thin and methodologically difficult to establish, yet still conclude strongly against DST. The logical leap from "acute harms exist" and "SJL correlates with poor health" to "perennial DST is worse than permanent Standard Time" is not fully bridged by the evidence presented. No conflict of interest is declared, and one author (Klerman) is NIH-funded, which is transparent. Overall the paper is scientifically substantive and the underlying circadian biology is sound — but it reads more as an advocacy document than a balanced review.
