Why does pixel art still thrive? I showed my teenage daughter a PC-Engine game - she complimented “the pixel art”! Once a necessity, pixel graphics are now an artistic choice. Is it nostalgia or is something uniquely appealing about the look? #RetroGaming #GameArt [Picture from Celeste 2018]

I think it makes it possible for very small teams to make games without spending 3 years on the graphics bit…

I always assumed it’s because it was never trying to be “realistic.” In the age of PS5Pro and $2500 GPUs, people point out that 3D polygons and such are still not “real enough” for them. When it’s distinctly something different it can exist in its own space. That or I’m old and rationalizing.

In a way that's what "video games" are, the unique art style of the medium. Something that pissed me for years was something like The Simpsons doing videogames as "process the image behind a mosaic grid" instead of pixel art. I was very happy when Futurama did that 15 years ago or so.

Maybe a craving for simplicity?

Good pixel art is a skill in itself..... I think that is partly why it will appeal to people of all generations.... it may also appeal to the younger generation through the popularity of things like Minecraft

I really dislike it in modern games, but like it on old systems especially ones I can plug into a crt or use a scaler with a crt filter.Raw pixels annoy me.The PC-engine is actually lower res than most of it's contemporaries but it's on-screen colour count makes up for it. Where you using a RetroTINK
