I think of chiptune music being in two camps. "Solid" (DuckTales "Amazon", SMB2 "Overworld") and "Arpeggio" (Project S-11 "Stage 1", Shantae "Day Travel"). It seems the latter is more common to hear nowadays, and I do think it's because of the C64. 🤔

I say yes and it influence more than just video games music youtu.be/gbcG2TI4GBk?... remember that tune? Just to give an exemple. A lot of electronic music artist was rocking out to sid chip tunes playing games . More that it's competitors? I don't know about that but i know it had a huge impact

I think a talented few chip musicians did. The SID was preferred by the musicians at Software Creations yet they still did some corking AY tunes.

It was a proper subtractive synth. Many other sound chips could only produce square waves, but the SID had square / pulse (with PWM), sine, sawtooth and noise. It also had filter, ring mod and hard sync. You wouldn't usually find these features on anything without a Moog / Korg / Roland badge on it.

Massive influence certainly. More than other chips? That's hard to say. Im inclined to say no, but I might well be wrong. Interesting question though

The SID is iconic but I'd reckon the GI AY/Yamaha YM series had a wider impact.

Not only did it have a massive influence on modern chiptunes but it shaped my musical tastes for the rest of my life.

I would argue that the DMG Gameboy had more influence on "modern" chiptune scene, due in no small part to trackers like Nanoloop and LSDJ being so accessible. But I'm not sure how much influence the SID had on the 2A03 (NES) sound voices that the DMG was based on.
