Possibly one of the key things was that the Oric had a mildly obtuse graphics system. You can't just say 'this region is this colour with these pixels' - because of that system even simple things like plotting a line becomes quite complex. That alone probably killed a lot of software.

I attribute the success of the Speccy vs. other contenders to the working class families being able to afford it, and thus creating a generation of British kids who learned how to make games, which led to a small, localized publishing boom.
