Text from a statue plaque: ”THE MONUMENT OF LIPPENS AND DE BRUYNE. Lieutenant Lippens and, from Blankenberge, sergeant De Bruyne both served in the colonial army of King Leopold Il in the Congo Free State. Involved in the complex war on eastern Congo, ivory trade and slavery, they were killed in 1892 during the Arab campaign near Kasango. A monument by sculptor Guillaume Charlier of Brussels was placed through an initiative of former colonialists. The inauguration took place on September 9, 1900. During World War I, the Germans stole the bronze statues. On Septem- ber 10, 1922 the statue now with naked woman and child, was inaugurated for the second time.”
