Janet Jackson’s ‘Control’ is 40 today. 40!!! I was 16 when she dropped this and it immediately became one of several pop albums - along with Madonna, Duran Duran and others - that laid the bedrock to my pop music taste that’s forever in overdrive today. 🧵1/4

Only nine songs. Seven of them were spun off as singles in the U.S. If I gotta pick a top track… it’s “When I Think Of You”. A song about infatuation. Those two piano notes succinctly illustrated the highs and off-kilter lows in those emotionally chaotic early days of falling for someone new. 🧵2/4
