I'm somewhat pleasantly surprised that it took nearly half an hour before a man turned up to simply deny the reality of male violence against women. That's what being on the kinder, gentler social network gets you!
This was the first image I ever saw of a person happily advertising their yen to enact violence on women. I remember being so shocked, thinking, surely the community won't let this stand? Don't they realise this sort of thing makes them look bad? I was naive & they were right - it didn't make then look bad at all. At worst people dismissed the threats as unserious. At worst we were told that this is only to be expected from a community that "suffers the worst oppression in the world" & that if the threats are acted upon we will deserve it. At the first ever trial for anti-feminist violence, a case of a trans activist punching a woman & knocking her to the ground, the judge began by forcing the victim, on pain of being held in contempt of court, to refer to her attacker by female pronouns.
One of the main focuses of Miller's inquiry has been how transgender people are treated in hospital and in prisons. "In the public sector we would expect there to be a better understanding of these issues. But it appears to simply reflect the views that are held more generally in society," she explains. "So the sort of discriminatory activity that we have evidence of happening both in the prison service and NHS is really unlike almost any other discrimination we see in those services."

Iran crisis: Rock steady Starmer shows diplomatic nous This morning we had the two extremes of British politics calling for the UK to do two extremely stupid things. Zack Polanski wants Keir Starmer to denounce Trump as a war criminal. Priti Patel wants Starmer to join in the air strikes on Iran, despite the fact her party hollowed out the armed forces to the point where it would be pointless, and that it would be deemed unlawful by the Attorney General. So Starmer’s position is not weakness or paralysis. It’s an attempt to find a genuine way of de-escalating this war before it does serious economic and human damage – not just in the Middle East but here. Let’s be clear about the first thing Keir Starmer did: he communicated with Merz and Macron to ensure that the response of E3 major military powers in Europe was going to be united: no practical support for the strikes, calls for de-escalation and solidarity with countries and populations coming under Iranian attack. Right now ministers, diplomats, intelligence and military chiefs will be asking: what’s Trump’s endgame? Are there any factions of the regime we can talk to? What are the security and terror risks at home, or against UK bases and expats abroad? With Tories calling for us to join the action, even if it were lawful, the question is: to achieve what? It is far from clear that Trump can achieve regime change. And having planned for a conventional slugging match against the Iranian state, the US/Israel are now seeing instead a policy of Gotterdammerung – the regime could go down in flames, taking the oil and the region with it.
