Better Letter post of Professional Comic Book Lettering Tips by Nate Piekos Number 5: Properly Stacking Text in Dialogue Balloons. "Properly stacked text should conform naturally to an ovoid shape; short on the top and bottom, wider in the middle. (With the exception of when your but a balloon against a border, of course...) When you've been lettering comics for a few years, experience lets your break lines of text from a script into this shape without much trouble. Professional letterers can do it on the first try. It speeds up the lettering process tremendously! But what if your have a very long word? If it's easily hyphenated, you could break it in two.(Although I try my best not to hyphenate.) Some words don't hyphenate well. See my examples below. 'Encyclopedia" could be broken in half, but it would look awkward. The trick for a bit of dialogue with a long word, is to use it as a reference for line breaks; figure out where to put the long word so that it's at the widest part of the balloon. In the event that the longest word is at the beginning of the dialogue...you have to get creative!" Visual examples of lettering this practice are shown bellow.
