Sembéne Ousmane may be a genius you haven’t heard of. He’s a Senegalese writer and filmmaker. The short story “Tribal Marks” tells of maroons (escaped slaves) in a kind of perspective flipped from Melville’s Benito Cerano. Years ago, I saw his film “Black Girl” — unforgettable!
