I never read Blood Meridian because I don’t like senseless violence. McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, by contrast, uses suspense more than violence. Or, Bolaño 2666, which is more Dantean in its relentless descriptions of crimes. Genesis, of course, has purpose in its rough scenes

I think it’s a tired trope to try to make a scene “rise to the level of the cosmos.” Dumb theatrics. Each of the othe texts I mentioned— No Country, 2666, Divine Comedy, Genesis—bring the cosmos down to Earth and keep it there. I find the narrative and psychological effects more powerful
