IF THIS was the most adventurous Christmas TV ever, it had little to do with the programme planners but everything to do with the three men making rings around the moon, and it produced the biggest gaffe the B.B.C. has ever committed. They missed it-the vital moment when the world was watching for the astronauts to emerge from their first orbit of the moon. The B.B.C. switched away from the moon shot, while Houston Control must have been going crazy because for the first time they had lost the moon ship. We all sat and wondered whether the rocket motor had failed. Here was the most exciting moment of our times, but while all this was going on we were watching Ted Ray read a fairy story on " Jackanory." It was four minutes and hundreds of infuriated telephone calls later that the B.B.C. interrupted the children's programme to say that Colonel Bor-man and his crew had safely gone round the moon. Ridiculous While the world held its breath, the B.B.C. made the most ridiculous excuses. "We had to keep faith with the children. they said. As if the children were not more interested in the fate of Apollo 8...
