I visited the Charlie Howard Memorial in Bangor, Maine. Charlie was thrown off a bridge to his death in downtown Bangor in a homophobic hate crime in July, 1984.

I would have been 6 years old living 85 miles away in Lewiston. Apparently there was a major march across the bridge from Lewiston to Auburn in response, as well as ones in Portland and Bangor, and the mass reaction to the incident was crucial to kickstarting the fight for gay rights in Maine
