Mayo protestors seek 'end to Gaza genocide’ Members of the Mayo branch of Ireland-Pales-tine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) carried their message seeking an end to the genocide in Gaza into the chamber of Mayo Co Council on Friday. A group gathered in the public gallery during the council's annual general meeting, holding placards and white bundles of cloth, which have become a representative symbol of the deaths inflicted upon ordinary men, women, children and babies in Gaza. Mayo IPSC chairperson Debbie McCole, a native of Ballina, told the Western People more about the symbolism behind these items, known as shrouds. "They are props to represent babies in shrouds. They are an estimated 400,000 people dead in Gaza. Even Donald Trump has acknowledged there was a huge decrease in the Gaza population from 2.3 million to 1.8 million, over half of which are children," she said. "As a mother, teacher, and a human being, I cry every day about children who are starving, who are being sniped, killed and blown up." Ms McCole said the group attended the meeting as there were several things they expected from the council that have not been done. "Mayo County Council hasn't done much in relation to Palestine. They did one motion last November calling for a ceasefire but we are looking for full support of an undiluted version of the Occupied Territories Bill," she said. "We want the council to call for an end to the use of Shannon Airport by US military planes and to support calls for the Irish Central Bank to no longer facilitate the sale of Israeli war bonds." Later that day, Ms McCole, members of the IPSC and other members of the public gathered on the Ham Bridge in Ballina for their weekly 'Bridgil', a weekly protest calling for an end to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which Ms McCole describes as a "full scale Holocaust of historic proportions". Four of the five Mayo TDs recently voted against a Dáil motion to stop the Central Bank facilitating the sale of Israeli government bonds - bonds Israeli ministers have described as “war bonds”. The only Mayo TD who voted in favour was Sinn Féin’s Rose Conway-Walsh. Like many people across Ireland, I am gobsmacked that our financial system plays any role in facilitating the sale of war bonds at a time when Israel is under investigation by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for alleged genocide. The ICJ has already issued binding interim orders, recognising that Israel’s actions may plausibly amount to genocide. In July 2024, it issued an advisory opinion stating that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal and that states must avoid aiding or assisting in maintaining that situation, including through economic or trade channels. So why are these bonds still being approved in Ireland? The Central Bank says its hands are tied: that it is simply following the EU Prospectus Regulation. During a recent Oireachtas committee hearing, the Bank’s Governor said that if the disclosures are technically correct, the Bank must approve the prospectus. That reasoning is overly narrow and detached from the gravity of the situation. While compliance with EU law is necessary, Irish institutions have no discretion whatsoever - even in the face of credible allegations of genocide. It was disturbingly bureaucratic, even Kafkaesque. It also ignores the wider international legal framework, including Ireland’s obligations under international humanitarian law and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The possibility of invoking Article 13 of the Prospectus Regulation, which allows for suspension where there are “significant new factors” or “material mistakes” - arguably relevant when a bond issuer is credibly accused of genocide - was not even considered.
