Mayor Wilson Thanks City Council For Passage of Seattle Transit Measure Renewal “Right now, our transit system is breaking records and delivering real value for our families. I appreciate City Council’s partnership in crafting a package to voters offering a low-cost way to bring people more and better of the cheapest travel option available, public transit. It’s a package that respects people’s hard-earned dollars and brings 100,000 more bus trips to Seattle every year and funds 22,000 free transit passes for low-income households. Next week, we will gather in City Hall so I can sign the bill and send it to voters for their consideration this November. To everyone who showed up and helped shape the Seattle Transit Measure – I also say thank you, and congratulations.”

I am the mom of a wonderfully active child. As she grows, I want her to find belonging, joy, and friendship at school and, if she chooses, while competing in school sports. The Supreme Court's decision yesterday allowing states to exclude transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports teams threatens this vision for trans kids and families, and for all of us who want sports to be a welcoming and life-affirming experience for all our kids. Regardless of this decision, students in Washington continue to have a right to play on the sports team aligned with their gender identity. But we must be vigilant in continuing to protect all students’ right to be free from gender discrimination. Let’s keep Washington safe and welcoming for all students.

Shortly following my announcement of new investments in Seattle’s children and families today, we heard gunfire. No one was injured, but it was a stark reminder of a reality too many people in this city live with every day. We cannot let this become normal. We must invest in opportunity, and we must continue working to keep people safe. Today’s announcement was about making those necessary investments. And in the weeks ahead, I'll share more about our comprehensive strategy to address gun violence and public safety. Our work, and my responsibility, is to help create the conditions where all Seattle communities can live their lives without fear.

I am aware of the reports from the U-District about a woman who was detained by federal authorities and separated from her small child who is currently with CPS. My team has been closely monitoring the situation and have confirmed that she was detained by the Department of Homeland Security on a criminal warrant. To the best of our knowledge this was not immigration-related. I'm grateful for community members who have been responsive in the immediate aftermath and will continue to work in partnership."

"Last Friday night, two Rainier Beach students were taken from their families far too soon. Their lives mattered. Their futures mattered. And the pain their loved ones are carrying is beyond words. As a parent, my heart is broken. No family should ever have to experience this kind of loss. I am holding the families, friends, classmates, and teachers of these young people close, and I grieve alongside the Rainier Beach community. Last night, there was another deadly shooting in Pioneer Square. We cannot accept a city where young people are lost to violence before they've had a chance to fully live."
I’m horrified by the news this morning out of Minneapolis. I mourn for the victims, their family and friends, and for all of the families being torn apart every day by immigration agents. I’m also inspired by the ferocity of the community response there. Tens of thousands of people protested in the bitter cold. Neighbors have formed groups to monitor the activity of federal agents and share that information to help keep community members safe. I know we can practice that same level of solidarity in Seattle too.
