i think i owe olivia wilde an apology, because the invite is fantastic. wilde directed the fuck out of this one. there's some incredibly slick editing and pacing choices. literally every performance is outstanding. genuinely the first time in my life I haven't been annoyed by seth rogen's laugh. edward norton embodies bisexuality. penélope cruz is simply iconic. i need to get really into home renovation to distract myself from my failing marriage more than i need air. the first two thirds are absolutely hysterical, one of the funniest films I've seen in a while. the final third gets a little heavy handed with its messaging, but mostly works anyway. weird watching this as an asexual for whom sex plays a very different role in relationships, but there was still a lot here that really resonated with me. I love a good bottle movie and this was among the best I've seen.

When I think about a hypothetical video game canon, Cave Story is one of the first games to come to mind. Not only is its' impact on the modern indie scene worth studying—nearly every major indie release through the late 2000s to mid 2010s cites Cave Story as an inspiration—but it provides a tremendously well crafted experience from beginning to end. Cave Story is a fairly hard game to classify. While many have categorized its' mix of exploration and platforming as a Metroidvania, progression is far more likely to be locked behind literal keys rather than new character abilities. Personally, I'd argue that Cave Story is more of a JRPG (if not presented as one). More than any other game, playing Cave Story reminds me of early Dragon Quest. Getting to a new area, talking to its' NPC inhabitants who need some kind of key item, and searching for that key item in order to unlock the way forward, with enough narrativizing to keep things interesting. It's a setup that actually works quite well for a platformer, and Cave Story does a great job keeping its' different objectives varied enough that the areas never feel too repetitive. Each area feels distinct from one another, with level and enemy design encouraging different approaches to combat. Each weapon is satisfying to use, paried with a fairly unique levelling system that helps to encourage more deliberate play. The games' bosses are largely pretty simple, though later areas frequently chain multiple fights together, putting a strain on your available resources. The game's difficulty is fairly well balanced all the way through (with a notable spike in difficulty for the true ending's extra area). Cave Story's presentation is simple but effective. The music is largely melodic and incredibly memorable, and the simple spritework is incredibly charming. Despite this presentation, the game is able to sell its' heavier moments incredibly effectively. As an amateur, solo-developed release from over 20 years ago, Cave Story…
To the right kind of person, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is still the coolest shit ever made. The animation and performances are beyond stiff and the directing is more than over the top, paired with an overly vague and convoluted script. But the film truly locks in on its' action scenes—they all feel utterly visceral and kinetic. The soundtrack is expectedly great, and while the narrative is a bit of a mess there are a number of character moments that legitimately land here, even as the film actively works to undermine them. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is a bit of a mess, but it's still a fun time. In 2005, to an audience clamoring for more Final Fantasy VII, it absolutely delivers. There's a lot to love here, even as its' flaws only grow more obvious with age.

This sure is Star Fox 64. It's clear that there was a lot of attention to detail poured into realizing these stages and building on the original's narrative, and while the new environments are gorgeous in motion and the new story details help to contextualize and connect the levels together (with maybe a little bit too much dialogue in some stages), I can't say that anything here really stuck with me in ways that the original didn't. The game plays basically identically with some minor control tweaks, the reworked multiplayer just doesn't have enough content to carry any longevity, and the challenge mode is an interesting idea but none of the challenges I tried were particularly interesting. Outside of coming back for the other routes I'm honestly not sure if I'll ever bother with this one again; it's a perfectly competent, technically gorgeous remake of Star Fox 64 that's missing enough of the original's atmosphere to ultimately fall flat.

My initial impressions were heavily colored by lag causing most of the game to run at single digits but after doing a second playthrough with a properly configured emulator Touhou Kaikidan: Mystic Square is a great time. ZUN absolutely went all out here, with four separate playable characters and some of the most ambitious bullet patterns I've seen from a bullet hell of this era (especially for one available at home). Like the other PC-98 games the stage design is a little bit empty and the back half suffers from stages that drag on just a little too long, but the bosses are more than good enough to make up for it. Graphically it's more of the same, with a lot of assets repurposed from earlier titles, but I found there to be far more visual clarity on the bullets and background elements here compared to earlier titles. The music is incredibly solid here, both the most complex and memorable soundtrack in the series up to this point. The writing fell a little flat for me compared to Lotus Land Story but I found the Stage 4 bosses to be legitimately effecting in a way I haven't seen in the series up to this point and everything else here plays great. The dream gauge is a little weirdly implemented but the best scoring system so far. Building the gauge can be challenging but once it's maxed out the only way to drop it is by missing or bombing, and the score benefits are so good that I pretty much avoided bombing as much as possible here. Obviously an intentional part of the design, but left me with a massive stock by the end of the game that I really didn't know what to do with. Touhou Kaikidan: Mystic Square is an incredibly ambitious and absolutely packed sendoff to Touhou's PC-88 era. It plays great (with the right settings), sounds great, and packs more than enough content. Very solid entry that holds its' own against the later Windows-era titles, and an all around good time
