Juniper heaths in southern Germany are located on dry, nutrient-poor sites that are usually steep and remote from towns and which rarely allow for any use other than grazing. They emerged in the last centuries through sheep and goat grazing or cattle grazing. The browsing by sheep, goats and cattle has kept all the tasty plants short.
