From Pixels to Pathogens: Connecting Satellite Earth Observations with Mosquito- Borne Diseases Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and West Nile virus pose significant public health challenges worldwide. Because mosquitoes and the pathogens they transmit are sensitive to environmental factors, disease risk is influenced by global trends in climate change and urbanization. Satellite Earth observations are an essential source of data on global environmental change, and thus can inform mosquito-borne disease research and support the development of tools for public health. However, scale mismatches between satellite measurements and disease transmission cycles present a fundamental challenge, as do the influences of non-environmental factors that are not readily tracked with satellites. This talk will address these issues by synthesizing case studies and discussing ways to more effectively incorporate satellite Earth observations into research and applications. We seek a colleague with expertise in geospatial approaches to Earth System Science who works at the intersection with socioecological systems to address global environmental change. Disciplinary foci may include, but are not limited to: Climate Sciences, Land Cover and Land Use Change, Biogeochemistry, Geomorphology, and Natural Resource Management. Review of candidates will begin on December 16, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. The expected start is Fall 2025.
