Cassatt turns simple grooming into a meditation on self-awareness, repetition, and the shifting ways a woman can be seen: by herself, by a mirror, and by us. Painted late in Cassatt’s career, around the time her eyesight was beginning to fail, the work still shows remarkable control in flesh tones, loose brushwork, and the luminous softness of the robe. Denise appears thoughtful, self confident, and fully present. She is not an ornament, but a person inhabiting a quiet moment of self-fashioning.

The title suggests vanity, but the painting can also be considered as a study of self-fashioning including how a woman sees herself, prepares herself, and negotiates the gaze of others. The corset, mirror, and partially loosened clothing turn the scene into a subtle meditation on beauty, discipline, and performance. Painted in 1913, "Vaidade" became the work that earned Angelina Agostini a travel prize to Europe, marking a breakthrough in her career.

Contemporary critics did not treat "Vaidade" as merely a prizewinner. In 1913, one Rio publication described Agostini as exhibiting “two of the best things in the Salon,” naming "Vaidade" alongside "Costumes portugueses." Another account stressed that she was an artist whose work had shown “constant progress” over years of training.

Agostini was the daughter of the artist Abigail de Andrade and the painter-caricaturist Angelo Agostini, and she trained within Rio de Janeiro’s academic art world before building an international path. The year after this painting, she left for London. During World War I, she volunteered with the Red Cross. Seen in that context, this image is not just a salon interior. It is a poised statement by a Brazilian woman artist on the edge of wider recognition.

Japanese artist Itō Shinsui (伊東深水) was one of the major artists of shin-hanga (新版画), the early 20th-century “new prints” movement that revived ukiyo-e (浮世絵) through refined carving, printing, and contemporary taste. He became especially celebrated for bijinga (美人画), images of women that balance ideal beauty with close attention to fashion, posture, and mood. Here, a mirror creates a quiet double presence so we see a woman’s body turned away, yet her face meets us indirectly in reflection.

The title directs attention to the collar, but the print is really a study in controlled elegance and modern looking. It becomes the visual anchor of the composition like a sleek modern accent that sharpens the woman’s silhouette and turns a private grooming moment into a design of remarkable economy. The sitter is not identified, which lets the image function less as portrait than as a distilled vibe that is poised, cool, and exquisitely classic.

American artist Norman Rockwell painted this for the March 6, 1954 cover of The Saturday Evening Post, and it remains one of his most psychologically rich works. The sitter was Mary Whalen Leonard. As an adult, she recalled that she was not actually yearning to grow up in the way viewers often imagine. She saw herself as a tomboy and did not especially identify with the doll or the dream of becoming a movie-star beauty. That gap between the model’s lived experience and the painting’s emotional effect is part of what makes the work so strong.

Rockwell turned ordinary props into a meditation on self-image, aspiration, and the uneasy threshold between childhood and adolescence. Created just after Rockwell’s move to Stockbridge, during a period when his work was gaining greater emotional depth, the painting shows why he mattered so much. He could make a small domestic scene hold an entire inner life. Even now, the image feels startlingly current, because it captures a question many girls face: how much of the self comes from within, and how much is shaped by the images looking back at them.

Alma-Tadema was admired for scenes of “domestic life, Dutch habits, Dutch furniture and Dutch dress,” and this painting shows why. Every object helps tell a story, yet none overwhelms the mood. The mirror is especially clever as it withholds the sitter’s full identity while giving us just enough to feel her presence. Alma-Tadema built a successful career in London at a time when women artists were often pushed toward smaller, more private subjects. Here, she turns that expectation into strength. Rather than grand history, she gives us anticipation and self-presentation.

When American artist Stewart Morgan studied at Hendrix College, he described wanting to use his artistic abilities to help others through art therapy and community work. This painting feels more attentive to inner life rather than mere appearance. So, the title points beyond literal reflection in glass to emotional reflection via the act of pausing, remembering, and reckoning with the self. Morgan turns a private dressing table into a place where identity, memory, and feeling quietly gather.

This painting belongs to the visual world of Qajar Iran, where portraiture often balanced ideal beauty with dazzling ornament. Here, intimacy matters as much as decoration. The title tells us these are sisters, but their individual names are lost, so the work preserves kinship more than biography.

What remains especially memorable is the double portrait’s tenderness with two nearly equal figures, richly adorned yet emotionally restrained, presented as siblings whose bond is the painting’s true center.

This artwork is notably similar to a Qajar "Sisters" painting (also shared on bsky by me about a month ago) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from the same era ... and possibly the same unknown artist.

Pakistani artist Abdur Rahman Chughtai was one of the defining painters of modern South Asian art, celebrated for a personal style that fused Mughal and Persian miniature traditions, Islamic design, and the flowing linear grace of Art Nouveau. By the 1940, he had developed the lyrical manner now closely associated with his name including attenuated figures, hushed emotion, decorative rhythm, and a world suspended between literature, memory, and reverie.

In this work, two young women stand side by side in a still, dreamlike landscape. Their bodies are elongated and elegant, with pale golden-brown skin, fine straight noses, dark almond-shaped eyes, and long black hair partly covered by soft draped head coverings. Both wear flowing cream garments edged with delicate patterning. The woman behind extends her arm with blue-and-white blossoms, while the woman in front lifts a small red flower bud near her shoulder. Fine jewelry hangs lightly across the front figure’s chest, and a rose-colored sash curves across her waist. It is less a portrait of two specific individuals than an idealized meditation on companionship, beauty, and quiet feminine presence. The objects and plants seem to act as emotional symbols as much as objects, suggesting tenderness, ritual, or exchange. Chughtai often transformed women into bearers of mood and atmosphere rather than narrative action, and that restraint is part of the painting’s power. The scene feels intimate but not intrusive, ornamental yet emotionally sincere. It invites us to linger over contour, color, and gesture, where friendship itself becomes the subject.

Artist Susan Watkins turns a familiar tea scene into something quietly modern. The title itself (part French, part English) suggests cosmopolitan play, fitting for an American painter who trained in New York and Paris and built an international career at the turn of the century. Around 1903, she was already earning praise for her technical control and elegant interiors, even as women artists were often steered toward “acceptable” domestic subjects.

She makes the room feel lived-in and intelligent, a space where women’s interior lives matter. Later, she would say that meaningful work brought “the most lasting and most perfect happiness.” This painting feels shaped by that conviction to be disciplined, observant, and full of quiet self worth.

The title gives the scene this painting deeper meaning. “Paraclete” is a word often translated as comforter, advocate, or helper, and Nigerian artist Bamidele Ibrahim uses that idea to turn a quiet domestic encounter into an image of care as a spiritual and human necessity. This is not a lesson scene or a hierarchy of power. Instead, a seated figure appears to offer steadiness, refuge, and companionship to someone worn down by sorrow, fatigue, or uncertainty.

Born in Lagos, Ibrahim’s work often joins contemporary figuration with Ankara-inspired fabrics, intense dark tonalities, and themes drawn from social, religious, and everyday human experience. In this painting, those concerns come together with unusual tenderness. The patterned wall does not distract from the figures. It surrounds them like a living atmosphere, so that support, identity, and community are not background conditions, but the very fabric through which people endure.

The painting’s impact comes from comparison. Japanese artist Ryuichi Terashima (寺島龍一) does not show the women interacting. Instead, he places them in charged proximity, inviting us to view tradition & modernity, performance & individuality, plus Japan & the world. The maiko’s patterned robe spreads outward like a pool of fabric, while the modern sitter’s angular elbows and planted hands make her presence firmer, even defiant. Their shared kneeling pose creates a fragile bridge between two eras and identities.

By 1976, Terashima was an established painter who had studied European art and become known for figure painting. This work appeared in the 8th reformed Nitten exhibition that year. The picture feels less like a simple double portrait than a meditation on postwar Japanese self-image like how older codes of beauty endure, how imported styles reshape the present, and how women’s bodies are often made to carry those cultural meanings. The painting stays memorable because it never fully resolves the contrast.

Two stylish figures fill the frame so closely that their bodies and hats almost become the whole world of the painting. At left, one woman turns toward us with a poised gaze. Danish artist Gerda Wegener built her career around images of modern femininity, and by the mid-1920s in Paris she was painting women with a sophistication shaped by fashion, nightlife, and changing gender roles. This work depicts the artist with Lili Elbe (Gerda’s spouse and frequent model). Born Einar Wegener before transitioning, Lili Elbe was also a Danish artist. Gerda’s portraits of Lili became some of the most memorable images of femininity, performance, and self-invention in early 20th-century art.

The painting’s title uses cocottes (a French term that can suggest fashionable, flirtatious, or even courtesans) so the picture plays knowingly with glamour, performance, and desire. The rose at center is likely both invitation and symbol, while the compressed space turns adornment into emotional language. Rather than simply depicting two chic women in hats, Gerda offers a vision of femininity as artifice, intimacy, and self-fashioning that is exquisitely composed, slightly mischievous, and definitely radical for its time.

Drawn from classical Japanese literature and Noh theater, two women appear in a mountain setting associated with Ōhara (大原). The central figure is Kenreimon-in (建礼門院), once an imperial consort and daughter of Taira no Kiyomori (平清盛), now living as a Buddhist nun after the destruction of the Taira clan (平家). Beside her is her attendant. Rather than staging a dramatic encounter, Japanese artist Shimomura Kanzan (下村観山) paints the instant just before it. The women have gone out to gather flowers, and both direct their attention beyond the edge of the picture, toward a visitor we do not see. That missing presence is the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa (後白河法皇), whose sudden arrival is only implied. The effect is beautifully suspenseful. You can almost feel the pause with robes stilled, eyes lifted, breath caught. Shimomura lets narrative happen at the border of the image, trusting posture, atmosphere, and silence to carry the emotion.

That quiet intelligence is part of what makes the work so rewarding. At just 27, Shimomura was already a rising force in modern Japanese painting, having left Tokyo Fine Arts School and helped found the Japan Art Institute (日本美術院). He was also born into a hereditary Noh family, so a subject from the play Ōhara Gokō (大原御幸) was not borrowed casually. It came from a world of gesture, memory, and trained restraint that he knew from childhood. The title’s “dew” is the key poetic clue. Dew glitters, then disappears. In the world of “The Tale of the Heike (Heike Monogatari, 平家物語),” that makes it a perfect metaphor for courtly splendor, political power, and even life itself that’s radiant, fragile, and already vanishing. Shimomura turns that idea into mood. Sorrow has been refined into stillness.

The painting was recognized as exceptional in its own day, winning a rare special gold medal at a major joint exhibition of the Japan Art Institute (日本美術院) and the Japan Painting Association (日本絵画協会).

This painting belongs to the period when Spanish artist Francisco Iturrino first immersed himself in southern Spain and found in Andalusia a new language of color. Andalusian themes became central to his work, and here he is less interested in anecdote than in atmosphere like heat, brightness, conversation, and presence. The title identifies the figures as gitanas, a historical Spanish term for Romani women, but the picture also reflects the era’s habit of turning Andalusia into an “exotic” imagined South.

Each woman carries a distinct emotional force. At the same time, the work participates in a broader early-20th-century fascination with Andalucía as spectacle. Iturrino, born in Santander and raised in Bilbao, was at this moment moving toward the radiant palette and liberated brushwork that would make him one of Spain’s most vivid colorists. Here, light is almost the third subject as it binds white fringe, orange stripes, black hair, and flowers into a scene that feels both observed and dreamlike.

American artist Henry Mosler turns exhausting labor into something almost monumental. A diagonal rhythm of bodies, nets, and baskets gives the painting dignity and momentum, making two women workers feel heroic rather than picturesque. Set at Grandcamp on the Normandy coast and painted for the Paris Salon of 1881, the picture reflects a moment when artists were increasingly drawn to rural and coastal life, even as mechanization threatened older ways of working.

Cincinnati Art Museum notes that Mosler painted the canvas in his Paris studio, yet he still captured the shifting light of early evening with remarkable sensitivity. Zanzibar-born British artist Lubaina Himid created this work as a reimagining of James Tissot’s nineteenth-century "The Gallery of HMS Calcutta (Portsmouth)", but she removes the flirtatious naval officer and centers the women instead. That change transforms the story. What had been a scene of Victorian social intrigue becomes one of female presence, Black visibility, and shared interior life. The title still carries the weight of empire: “H.M.S.” signals British naval power, while “Calcutta” evokes colonial naming and imperial routes across oceans.

Painted in 2021, after decades of Himid’s work challenging cultural amnesia, the canvas feels both historical and immediate like a meditation on race, gender, memory, and the possibility of looking out from history rather than being trapped inside it.

Painted in 1931, this work shows artist Rufino Tamayo charting a path different from the more overtly political Mexican muralists of his era. Its force comes from design. And, its mystery comes from how much feeling is carried in the charged space between two faces while Nancarrow preserves individuality through tilt, gaze, and expression. The result is a painting about women with dignity and gravity … like they really are the true main characters of their own world.

German artist Lesser Ury was one of the earliest painters to make modern Berlin itself a major subject, and this picture shows why. Rather than describing every detail, he paints the city as sensation with damp air, passing traffic, fleeting encounters, and elegance amid transience.

A broad Berlin avenue opens in a haze of pale light and wet air. Bare dark trees rise along both sides of the street. Horse-drawn cabs move along the roadway, their forms softened by mist and quick brushwork. On the sidewalks, pedestrians appear only in flashes of clothing. Near the front, two young women stand out from the muted city around them. They are fashionably dressed, slim and walking side by side with silhouettes sharper than the rest. Ury pulls the eye toward them with small but deliberate accents of red—one woman’s dress, the other’s lips ... so that they are almost like sparks inside a gray-brown atmosphere. The architecture behind them feels stately but softened, less a mapped location than a remembered impression of the Charlottenburg district in motion.

The women are not incidental. They are the compositional and emotional center, embodiments of urban visibility, fashion, and self-presentation. The older horse cabs and classical façades suggest a city suspended between eras, where tradition and modern life overlap on the same street.

Born into a Jewish family in Prussia and based for most of his career in Berlin, Ury became known for atmospheric views of cafés, rain-slicked streets, and city light. Here, late in his life, he turns Berlin into both theater and weather as an urban stage where women moving through public space become signs of speed, modernity, and the fleeting glamour of the metropolis. Ury died in 1931 before the Nazi era and World War II. Unfortunately, much of his work was later lost or destroyed under the Third Reich.

French artist Paul Gavarni, born Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier in Paris, became famous for lithographs that observed modern life with elegance, wit, and a sharp eye for social performance. This print belongs to that world.

In a shaded garden, two young women are caught in a sudden, intimate moment on a painted green bench. The depiction may be flirtation, affection, satire, or even theatrical mischief as Gavarni leaves the scene open enough to provoke curiosity. That ambiguity is part of the work’s force. The dropped booklet hints at interruption, the diagonal pose creates a sense of motion and risk, and the shadowed setting turns it into a social drama. In the 19th century, such imagery could invite viewers to look with amusement, desire, or moral judgment. Today, the print stands out for preserving an unusually direct image of intimacy between women in a refined, carefully staged popular print. Small in scale but rich in implication, it shows how Gavarni could make a fleeting encounter feel psychologically charged, stylish, and impossible to dismiss.

British-Nigerian artist Ṣọlá Olúlòde (Sola Olulode) made this work in 2020, after studying painting at Brighton, during a period when isolation and longing for touch shaped daily life. She said "Eternal Light" was “of a couple embracing each other,” expressing the physical closeness many people missed in lockdown like “an ode to our loved ones.”

Set against a radiant field of saturated yellow, two Black figures are shown in a close embrace at the center of the canvas. One woman stands in front, head tilted inward, with eyes closed and long dark braids falling over one shoulder. A pale circular form, like a halo or luminous crown, rests across the upper forehead. Another woman leans forward to embrace her from behind, with a calm, inward expression. Her hair is gathered into rounded puffs. Both her arms meet across the chest of her companion. The taller woman reaches up to return the embrace as all four hands meet near her heart. Both wear warm red-orange patterned garments. Across the bodies and background, pale wax-resist marks and streaks cut through the paint like flashes of light, giving the scene a layered, glowing, and almost sacred atmosphere.

The image could be maternal, familial, friendly, or romantic. Olúlòde leaves tenderness open rather than policing it. Her materials and wax-resist processes draw on batik and Yoruba adire textile traditions, giving the surface a stained, layered, handmade presence. The yellow does not just describe light. It becomes feeling itself like warmth, devotion, protection, and memory. In Olúlòde’s work, Black intimacy is not framed through struggle alone, but through care, softness, and joy. This painting turns embrace into atmosphere with love as shelter, radiance, and survival.

That intimacy is central to Filipino artist Anita Magsaysay-Ho’s art. She is celebrated for painting Filipina women with dignity, solidarity, and inner life, often focusing on everyday labor or communal ritual rather than spectacle. Here, tea drinking becomes more than a domestic act. It is a shared pause, a small ceremony of warmth, companionship, and replenishment. The women do not look out to meet us. Instead, they remain absorbed in their own moment, which makes the scene feel especially tender and self-possessed.

Painted in 1957, the work belongs to Magsaysay-Ho’s mature modernist period, when she used flattened forms, rhythmic contour, and expressive color to distill experience rather than describe it literally. As the only woman associated with the Thirteen Moderns in the Philippines, she helped reshape modern Filipino painting while returning again and again to women’s worlds as sites of strength, beauty, and mutual care. This painting turns closeness itself into the subject with companionship as sustenance.

The alternate title, Les filles de Procida, suggests a more specific local identity tied to the island near Naples, though the sitters themselves are not named. Vesuvius is essential to the painting’s mood. It is picturesque, but its drifting smoke also introduces unease, placing youthful beauty beside a reminder of instability and change. Painted in 1835, after Bodinier’s Italian studies and travels, the work balances academic finish with Romantic feeling via polished surfaces, idealized faces, and a carefully staged intimacy that invites us to see these women as a pair bound by closeness, poise, and shared presence.

By 1984, Zelenine had long since left the Soviet Union and was living in France, and that biographical shift matters. This image feels shaped by exile as much as by performance. The title suggests emotional ease, but American artist Maxfield Parrish makes contentment feel constructed as much as felt. By 1927, he was one of the most famous image-makers in the United States, celebrated for painstaking technique, glowing layered color, and scenes that could move easily between fine art and mass reproduction. This picture belongs to his well-known “girls on rocks” era, a formula that became enormously popular through commercial commissions, including an Edison Mazda calendar.

The original text around this illustration sharpens that intimacy into meaning. The women are introduced as “enlacées ainsi” (entwined like that) to hold each other. A few pages later, the narrator insists, “Elles ne se quittent jamais” or they never leave one another. Another line says they are not deceived by love, but have outwitted it and hold it “captif sur leurs lèvres pareilles” (captive on their matching lips). Those phrases transform the image from a pretty Belle Époque fantasy into a vision of feminine attachment imagined as mutual pleasure, refuge, and alliance.

At the same time, the work belongs to a French japoniste book culture that stylized Japan for Parisian readers, so its beauty is inseparable from European performance and projection. That tension is part of its power now. The print offers cherry blossoms, elegance, and theatrical grace, but also a rare early-20th-century image in which two women appear not merely adjacent, but bound to one another by touch, companionship, and choice.

What makes the picture gripping is that it stages deception as intimacy. Simhika does not attack; she escorts. Draupadi is not shown as defeated, but as alert, vulnerable, and morally luminous amid danger.

Both women move close together through a dim forest path. On the right, Draupadi wears a vivid red sari edged in gold. Her skin is light brown, her face tense, and her body pulled inward. She clasps both hands high near her chin, as if bracing herself. Her eyes are wide, giving the impression that she senses danger before she fully understands it. On the left, Simhika appears calm, almost companionable. She wears a dark blue-black sari with a red blouse, jewelry on her neck and ears, and flowers tucked into her hair. One arm circles behind Draupadi’s shoulders while the other hand gestures ahead, as though politely guiding her onward. Legendary Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma sets them against tall tree trunks, dense foliage, and a narrow opening of light in the distance. The softness of the brushwork makes the forest feel lush but also enclosing.

Ravi Varma, who became famous for merging European academic realism with Indian epic and devotional subjects, often gave mythological figures the emotional immediacy of living people. Here, he turns a narrative from the Mahābhārata into a study of trust, threat, and feminine presence. The red of Draupadi’s sari reads almost like an alarm within the green-brown woods, while Simhika’s darker dress helps her blend into the forest and into the role of hidden menace.

The scene also reflects Ravi Varma’s gift for making epic women psychologically legible. Draupadi is not just a literary heroine, but a person caught in the instant when courtesy, fear, and intuition collide.

Painted in 1864, this watercolor belongs to British artist Simeon Solomon’s early, ambitious engagement with classical and poetic subjects. Solomon, still a young artist in his twenties and closely associated with Pre-Raphaelite circles, turned to Sappho as a figure through whom desire, lyric beauty, and ambiguous identity could be imagined with unusual frankness.

Solomon makes that longing legible without making it crude.

The doves suggest paired love. The darker bird introduces unease or interruption. The deer evokes a sacred, poetic realm. The result is delicate but radical. It's an image that treats closeness between women as cultured, beautiful, and emotionally serious rather than marginal. Tate acquired the work in 1980, and it remains one of Solomon’s most resonant pieces on desire, classicism, and imagined lesbian history.

Born in Soweto , South Africa in 1999, Tshabalala has spoken about wanting to bring Black women forward in a history of art that so often pushed them to the edge or cast them in compromised roles. Here, she answers the old genre of the odalisque and reclining nude with a new image of beauty, leisure, and self-definition.

Rest becomes a political and poetic space. The women do not need to explain themselves. Their presence is enough. In the context of "When We See Us," a landmark exhibition centered on Black self-representation and Black joy, the painting feels especially resonant. It is luxurious, yes, but also corrective like a declaration that softness, vanity, beauty, sensuality, and rest all belong within the visual language of Black life. Tshabalala turns a familiar art-historical format into something freer and more generous, replacing the outsider’s gaze with one grounded in dignity, pleasure, and self-possession.

James Sant was one of Victorian Britain’s best-known painters, celebrated especially for portraits of aristocratic women and children, and later served as Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria. Here, instead of court display, he gives us a highly polished private moment.

The thorn suggests the old idea that beauty carries risk. Roses bloom, but they wound. The painting is less moral warning than study in feminine care, sympathy, and closeness. We do not know the sitters’ identities from the collection record, but Sant makes them feel less like portraits of individuals than embodiments of affection, delicacy, and emotional reassurance.

The girl at left has bright reddish hair and turns her face away from us, her body angled forward as if she has just noticed something beyond the frame. Her companion, with dark hair pulled back, is shown in profile in a dress of deep red, rose, and brown. Their linked arms create the emotional center of the painting. Around them, the city breaks into splintered planes, sharp diagonals, flashes of yellow light, fragments of wheels, railings, figures, shopfront reflections, and bouquet-like bursts of color near the lower edge. Space feels unstable and alive. The girls are clearly human and solid, but nearly everything surrounding them seems to vibrate, flicker, and fracture into movement. That tension is the point. Macke sets human closeness against the speed and sensory overload of modern life. The Städel notes how strongly the painting reflects the impact of Italian Futurism and French Cubism as the city is all motion, geometry, duplication, and glare, while the girls remain comparatively classical and self-contained. They do not dissolve into spectacle. Painted in 1913, when Macke was in his mid-twenties and already one of the most gifted artists in the orbit of Der Blaue Reiter, the work shows how deftly he absorbed new avant-garde ideas without losing his warmth toward everyday people. He was especially responsive to French modernism and to Robert Delaunay’s color-driven experiments, yet he kept returning to scenes of strolling, shopping, looking, and being together. The sitters here are unidentified, but that anonymity adds to the painting’s modernity. They become both specific companions and emblems of urban friendship. Seen now, one year before Macke’s death in World War I at just 27, the picture feels powerful and fragile at once like an image of companionship held steady inside a dazzling, unstable world.$
