Jambalaya
First theatrical screening for me, and unfortunately one of my most bizarre theater experiences. Around an hour and ten minutes in it abruptly paused, the lights came on, and we were all asked to leave while staff cleaned up an "accident." I later learned someone far away from me apparently vomited a great deal. Don't go to movies if you're sick folks. All that aside, it's a terrific movie and I was really struck by how perfectly paced and edited it is on this watch. It never once feels vignette-y or slow. Perfect cast too.

A review of High and Low (Kurosawa, 1963) that reads: The question of the first half (what should one sacrifice to save the life of an unrelated child?) feels much more poignant today than when I first watched this. The contradictions of virtually every ethical framework versus the genocide our governments, societies, and institutions support and participate in, combined with our relative impotence, is ripping me apart, and I'm sure I'm not alone. We could sacrifice as much or more than Gondo to help these children, but like Gondo, we do not know if these sacrifices would be completely futile. There's significantly more clarity in Gondo's situation than our own, perhaps, and we know that his sacrifice pays off. No movie can provide all the answers for us. One thing the movie does show us, however, is the value of talking about such things. Building a consensus and exposing selfish apathy costs almost nothing, and could change everything.
