“Safer than you.” Larkin presses her lips to his temple. “I’ve just been ordered to kill you.” “Ah.” She can feel him smile. “How inconvenient.” “I thought so.” “Are you going to?” “Most definitely.” “But not here.” She pulls back enough to look up into his eyes, but finds she can’t read him. “What makes you so certain?” “I know two true things about you, Elle. Your first name begins with an L, and you love to show off.” Larkin laughs. “This seems like a showy place to me.” “Hmm.” The sound rumbles in his chest. He looks past her, considering something over her shoulder. “It’s boring, isn’t it? Winning when all the cards are stacked in your favor? Regardless, you haven’t gotten what you want from me yet.” “What if I got it elsewhere?” He looks at her, then. Settles those warm brown eyes squarely on her and sees straight past Myna Starling. Winding through the heart of a night-darkened forest there is a road. Two lanes, a faded center stripe, no shoulder. It stretches long and narrow, pumping commuters from a run-down neighborhood on the edges of Talens into the vital, pulsing heart of that same city. The kind of road used to go away from and not toward. The kind of road that threatens to bring you home again. But Larkin Kane doesn’t have a home. At least, not one she’ll admit to. What she has is a prize. A prize that’s rapidly slipping her fingers, as Butterfly’s car slews around a tight corner with zero warning, throwing a shuttered warehouse between them like a shield. That’s the trouble with rural roads. They meander and twist. Tie up the uninitiated and spit them out in knots. Larkin respects them for that. They’re almost better liars than she is.
