We will not defeat fascism by propping up the men who act as its mercenaries and collect their payment in entitlement over the lives and bodies of others. We need a diverse coalition; it will be messy, conflicted, and made of imperfect people with imperfect histories or imperfect politics; but there must, in the final analysis, be a line drawn on who we give power to. We can welcome the vote of Graham Platner the citizen, in the privacy of the ballot box, without arguing he is entitled to become one of the world’s most powerful lawmakers. In a nation of some 340 million people, we can surely do better.

Text: Brainworms are contagious Even with the Republican Party’s many years of practice, conspiracism is not a uniquely right-wing phenomenon. Left-flavored populism has the same tendency towards oversimplified narratives and scapegoating a vague, shadowy elite. Right-wing crazies think the source of all evil is globalists, “the Cathedral,” or the Jews while left-wing crazies think it’s billionaires, “Wall Street,” or Israel. The conspiratorial mindset takes the fact that there are evil billionaires (see: Elon Musk) or evil Jews (see: Jeffrey Epstein) and extrapolates it in both directions, attributing every problem to an abstracted concept of the villain. This two-step is what makes conspiracism so corrosive to public discourse. It hijacks good-faith actors discussing genuine problems as vessels to spread a bad-faith worldview that inherently cannot solve real problems.

I’m also influenced by Anton Jäger’s suggestion that “hyperpolitics”—or constant and frenetic political activity in the absence of any structures that might convert this activity into real institutional change—is the dominant political register in 21st-century Western democracies. In the present it is at most an opening of a possibility, a set of tools placed at your disposal. An institution, a change to the social or economic order established through law that outlasts one’s paltry lifetime, that entangles other humans in such a way as to persist beyond one’s ability to direct them, that is immortality.

As speculation about the 2028 election heats up, we’re already being subjected to debates about who various constituencies will and won’t support against a future Trumpist or MAGA candidate. The biggest kerfuffle so far kicked up around Hasan Piker’s declaration that he wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in a hypothetical matchup against JD Vance. This is the wrong position. It’s politically and morally simple-minded and short-sighted. But it isn’t so hard to imagine that some more conservative-minded folks might raise a similar opposition to a nominee like, say, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This would also be wrong.

Text: I’m fascinated by the desire to ask the guy why he threw a rock through the post office window, the question implying the existence of one or even a handful of good reasons to do so. While they might not accept the particulars of the permission structure, people making this argument – knowingly or not – are in agreement with the American right on the praxis (do whatever the fuck you want and have zero consideration for anyone else). The right says this is OK and even laudable because you’re in charge, this is your life, your country, and you have a god-given right to behave in any way you want to behave. The “public urination is fine” left is saying it’s OK because you aren’t in charge, life is unfair, and human beings have no agency.
