Obviously, context dictates that almost all of the Constitution’s references to persons refer to those already born, because only an adult can, for example, run for office or commit a crime. But no one has ever suggested that, because a seven-year-old girl may not be President, she is not covered by the Constitution’s protection of her life or cannot insist upon the equal protection of the law. Like a seven-year-old, the unborn person has life, and that is what is expressly protected by the Due Process Clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.

Blocking or throttling of even potentially abusive crawlers is only appropriate in exceptional circumstances, such as an active denial-of-service attack, and, even then, is appropriate only on a temporary basis. By contrast, AI brings none of its thoughts. It has nothing to contribute and, through generating no friction, can briefly give the illusion of perfect understanding. The danger is that a subset of people might be trained to choose this sort of interaction over an actual conversation. If AI is a horoscope it is a uniquely flattering one. We might prefer to have our own thoughts, inarticulacies and biases polished and reflected back to us. We might, as a result, grow frustrated with the give and take of traditional conversation in which we earn our right to talk through a promise of reciprocal attention. In addition to OpenAI’s deals with chipmakers, the ChatGPT maker is also eying a broad mix of financing vehicles to fund its infrastructure efforts. Friar said OpenAI is “looking for an ecosystem of banks [and] private equity” to support its ambitious plans. She also hinted at a role for the US government to “backstop, the guarantee that allows the financing to happen,” but did not elaborate on how this would work. Asked for clarification, an OpenAI spokesperson said Friar was speaking in the context of the broader AI industry. There are currently no immediate plans about OpenAI pursuing a federal backstop, the spokesperson said.

Baiting Perplexity with “the digital equivalent of marked bills,” Reddit tested out posting content that could only be found in Google search engine results pages (SERPs) and “within hours, queries to Perplexity’s ‘answer engine’ produced the contents of that test post.”

I have taken the liberty of distributing to you material and lyrics pertaining to these accusations. There were three attacks in particular which I would like to address. Accusation No. 1. This attack was contained in an article written by Tipper Gore, which was given the forum of a full page in my hometown newspaper on Long Island. In this article Ms. Gore claimed that one of my songs, "Under the Blade," had lyrics encouraging sadomasochism, bondage, and rape. The lyrics she quoted have absolutely nothing to do with these topics. On the contrary, the words in question are about surgery and the fear that it instills in people. Furthermore, the reader of this article is led to believe that the three lines she quotes go together in the song when, as you can see from reading the lyrics, the first two lines she cites are an edited phrase from the second verse and the third line is a misquote of a line from the chorus. That the writer could misquote me is curious, since we make it a point to print all our lyrics on the inner sleeve of every album.
Tracing its origins from the witty, perceptive social commentaries of the critically observant Jane Austen, the traditional Regency romance often is considered to be the most elite of the romance subgenres. Graced with sparkling dialogue; intelligent, well-turned phrases; a glittering, though highly restrictive, social backdrop; and a preoccupation with the importance of social consequence and behavior, these chaste, refined comedies of manners have captured the imaginations of writers and readers alike; while few now are being published, they still have a small but militantly devoted fan base. Despite its current decline, the traditional Regency is one of the earliest of the classic romance subgenres, and, as such, helps provide a foundational introduction to the romance genre as a whole. Also, with the rise in popularity of the Regency- set historical, it is increasingly important that readers’ advisers know the differences between the two. In the strictest sense, Regencies are set during the “reign” of the Prince Regent (later George IV), and span only a brief period, 1811–1820; however, in the hands of current writers, particularly of Regency-set historicals, the boundaries have expanded by at least a decade on each side of that date line. As the popularity of the traditional Regency waned, the Regency-set historical stepped up to take its place. Bolder, sexier, more adventurous, and less restricted, these lively tales kept the trappings of the period but often forfeited much of the traditional subgenre’s core appeal in order to fit the broader historical mold.
