On one of edges of the raft is an old man holding his dead son on his knees in despair, he is surrounded by other corpses about to be washed away by the waves.

The painting (266x345cm) can be seen as a piece of dramatic reportage. Behind the background of buildings & a church spire is a dark black sky. The scene is dimly lit by a single large lantern placed on the ground. The foreground action depicts a group of condemned men standing in front of a rubbled wall. The central figure is of a man dressed in a white shirt, his arms held up in resignation of his fate. There is a line of soldiers men facing them with their muskets and bayonetts ready to take fire. 2 executed bodies lie next to an open grave to the left and there, between the condemned man and the blood spilt dead, is a priest with his hands clutched in prayer.
The composition of this canvas is arranged in diagonal lines, created by the figures and the smoke in the background to invoke a sense of movement and energy, reflecting the chaos of the event. Although fundamentally, it is still set out subtly in a traditional Classical manner. The focal point is a woman who symbolises the Goddess of Liberty (Greek Goddess, Eleutheria / Roman Goddess, Libertas). In France, she is Marianne, the female personification of France and the French Republic. She is holding aloft the Tricolour flag of the Revolution. These colours are repeatedly used throughout the painting such as her red sash, that can be interpreted as symbolizing civil liberties and economic freedom.
