The layout here is similar to the one seen in KOF '2003. The problem is, this game barely has characters. It's really blatantly unfinished so there's no way to split characters into teams without characters being in a multiple of 3. They're all shoved wherever they can fit. The layout itself is still good though. You have the red vs. blue coming back in the HUD used by each player, which is a good way to have it not be TOO much like in '94 and '98. The characters are all in the middle, not organized into teams with a random select put in the middle. You have a big portrait and name tag for the current character, and the chosen characters underneath. I quite like that it denotes the slot you're on next to your current character name. The globe in the middle and cool blue background also give it a sleek modern look that none of the games really had before. The artwork itself is very good. The music is just, not that great though. It's kinda nothing.
I've never liked how pretty much anything about KOFXI looks, and this extends to the character select screen. The circles just look dumb and the plain white background is boring. The layout itself is pretty good though. The teams evenly split down the middle while being spread across the bottom, making for some cool symmetry. the teams having their own colored background is nice even if 4 of them are green. You have big portraits and nametags for the characters you have selected and 3 spaces for your selected teammates facing off in the middle. Only problem I have with the layout is that the Hero Team sticks out above the rest between the nametags. It's not BAD, but a bit distracting. All the secret characters are off to the side, and though it's a pretty bad way to select characters, it's a good way to keep the main screen from looking bad.
