It felt like a violation. As a child, he was never interested in other people enough to want to know every fleeting emotion that crossed their stupid little minds, and it was forced on him anyway by something no one could control. Emotions contradict actions and words; they highlight lies. He found that people are fundamentally dishonest and he was being forced to perceive that dishonesty at all times. The Reapers have technology that can blunt it, but not enough, and it takes a lot of energy to tune people out. His feral reputation was cultivated for several reasons: his pyro powers make him restless and too-energetic (fire needs to be released); he doesn't see much of a reason to restrict himself (due to his self-reliance philosophy); and if that so happens to drive people away, well. That's on them. Likes to poke at people because 'at least then they're honest.' If he's causing the emotions he's perceiving (IE irritation from a quip, pleasure from sex, pain from combat), then it's more palatable.
