.@pensandpoison is someone who does not read ancient Greek, who cannot check αἰνότατον πόλεμον against a lexicon, who does not know that αἰνός means "terrible" and not "awe-inspiring", and therefore should not be telling tens of thousands of people that a translator distorted Homer. The translator did not distort Homer (at least on this example). This post distorted Homer. Here is the evidence. αἰνός in Homeric Greek means "terrible, dreadful, dire". The superlative αἰνότατον means "most terrible". Liddell-Scott-Jones, the standard reference lexicon of ancient Greek, defines αἰνός as "dread, horrible, freq. in Hom." and lists πόλεμος as one of the nouns it modifies, citing this exact line, Odyssey 8.519, as the example. The standard dictionary of ancient Greek treats αἰνότατον πόλεμον as a textbook case of the word meaning "terrible". lsj.gr/wiki/αἰνός Now look at the Fagles translation, presented here as the correct one. Fagles renders αἰνότατον πόλεμον as "the grimmest fight he had ever braved". Grimmest. Not "most awe-inspiring". Not "most glorious". Grimmest. Fagles and Wilson agree on what αἰνότατον means. Libe's post claims they disagree. They do not. If there is a legitimate criticism of Wilson here, it is not the one Libe's makes. It's this: πόλεμον means "war" or "battle". Wilson renders it as "violence", which is a broader, looser word. All four Greek translators use μάχη (battle) or πόλεμος (war); none use βία (violence). That is a real translation choice worth discussing. But to find it, you would need to know what αἰνότατον actually means, and more importantly, speak the fucking language. And there is a reason Homer chose αἰνότατον. Immediately after this song (Od. 8.521-531), Odysseus weeps. Homer compares him to a woman clutching the body of her dead husband as her city falls, beaten with spear-butts, dragged into slavery. The conqueror weeps like the conquered. That is not "awe-inspiring glory". That is Homer.

Unlike all the other panels though, here the sitting guy doesn't just stay silent but rises their arms and yells: "Nooooooo!!! My 2 genderinos".
