Xiahong "Xia" Hu, a 31'7"/9.63m giantess, stands amid a weekend market in a town plaza amongst some trees and stand-up canopies which people have set up under. The tops of the trees and canopies range from knee-high to butt-high for Xia. Though the people are out of frame, there's a bustle about the market. Xia, lifted by the bustle, swings her hips happily. She wears a shirt advertising her tailoring business: "LIKE WHAT YOU SEE? GOT U 'N STITCHES."

Headlines from MarketWatch.com highlighting how unseriously stock brokers are taking the current state of the economy: - "Wall Street's 12 favorite stocks could soar as much as 54% over the next year, analysts say" - "Why U.S. investors might be seriously underestimating the risk of a recession (cut-off subtitle of 'Credit markets aren't flashing recession indicators -- but that could be a problem')" - "The day before Good Friday is often a great day for the stock market. Will that be true again this year?"
I do wonder if we're going to ever see nostalgia for the modern minimalist design trends we see everywhere today. I'd be foolish to make a prediction, but my money's probably on no, or at least, not nearly to the same extent you see with other aesthetic trends. I could be wrong -- nostalgia is a power force on everyone, and I do think Corporate Memphis specifically could see a re-evaluation -- but I feel like the minimalism of today is associated with the sort of big tech overreach that's starting to get violently rejected by a lot of people. And honestly, I don't think the Trump & Covid era that this aesthetic coincides with is an era people will be super nostalgic for -- it's an era marked by trauma, cynicism, and increasing amounts of low-grade cultural slop like AI mills, Elsagate videos, or live-action Disney remakes. Put a different way, I think you now see an appreciation of Frutiger Aero and Vaporwave/Future Funk aethestics, and Y2K to a lesser extent, because they represent a time when technology was exciting, life-affirming, and full of promise, and people around the world wanted to use it to get more connected and enhance their lives. Now technology often is overwhelming, invasive, life-degrading, and inhuman, even in the words we use to describe it: we are "addicted" to smartphones; we waste hours "doomscrolling" on social media, fearful of "mobs" and "callout posts;" we're inundated with endless reams of "AI slop." Heck, the recommendations sidebar here is full of videos with titles like "How We Came to Hate Technology" and "Technology Isn't Fun Anymore," and I turned recs off! People neither like nor want this future, and we're starting to look elsewhere for a better example of how to balance the role of technology, nature, and our human lives. Past eras where tech wasn't so all-consuming, including those eras' design trends, are part of that. Ties in with the "New Romanticism" trend that others like Kate Alexandria and Ted Gioia have spoken to.
