An old terrier sitting in the grass on a sunny day. She was nearly 17! My parents’ dog but god do my kids love her. She’s been there their whole lives. Trips to Ohio were as much about seeing her as the grandparents. She was such a hyper little thing when they brought her only a couple months old and Lily, a beagle, home from the humane society. However high you thought she could jump, she seemed to always get about an extra foot. She loved to sit in the sun in her “sphinx pose” as we called it, looking dignified and content. I hoped we’d make it back one more time to see her but that was greedy of me. She’d already given us so much, now it’s time for her to rest.

You pull off the interstate at Thompson Springs, which isn’t so much a town as a collection of abandoned buildings. Then you drive down a dirt road for much longer than feels comfortable until you hit the narrow part of the canyon and these pictures are all over the rock face.
