from @KimiWoTsumugu To everyone who was looking forward to "Kimi wo Tsumugu". We, too, learned of the terrible news regarding the appalling behavior of an individual just a few hours ago. And we, of course, wish to distance ourselves from it as well. Our sincere sympathy and thoughts are with the victim. Such behavior does not deserve a platform. We are truly heartbroken that you had to go through this. None of the other people involved in the animation of “Kimi wo Tsumugu” were aware of this. The whole situation makes it difficult for us, as a lot of money, time, and effort have already been poured into this project—a project that was meant to be something big and go far beyond the scope currently announced. Social media use explains very little variance in well- and ill-being, compared with other factors. A large study that compared the association between social media use and well-being along with other characteristics of adolescents concluded that “the association of well-being with regularly eating potatoes was nearly as negative as the association with technology use, and wearing glasses was more negatively associated with well-being.” [6]. A large longitudinal study of adolescents concluded that social media are among the least important factors in predicting changes in mental health [50]. A weighted national sample of over 20,000 Americans found that social media use was one of the least valuable predictors of loneliness—and, in this study, more Facebook use was associated with less loneliness [62].

One of the key pieces of evidence the New Mexico attorney general used against Meta was the company’s 2023 decision to add end-to-end encryption to Facebook Messenger. The argument went like this: predators used Messenger to groom minors and exchange child sexual abuse material. By encrypting those messages, Meta made it harder for law enforcement to access evidence of those crimes. Therefore, the encryption was a design choice that enabled harm. The state is now seeking court-mandated changes including “protecting minors from encrypted communications that shield bad actors.” Yes, the end result of the New Mexico ruling might be that Meta is ordered to make everyone’s communications less secure. That should be terrifying to everyone. Even those cheering on the verdict. End-to-end encryption protects billions of people from surveillance, data breaches, authoritarian governments, stalkers, and domestic abusers. It’s one of the most important privacy and security tools ordinary people have. Every major security expert and civil liberties organization in the world has argued for stronger encryption, not weaker.

Maomao was nursing a throbbing headache. This... This is it! She was experiencing that fabled thing called a hangover. She wasn’t sure it counted as a hangover if it hadn’t been an entire day, but having a headache after you stopped being drunk was one of the primary symptoms, wasn’t it? Rattling along in the carriage only made her feel even worse. It wasn’t pleasant, and yet... “Ahh! This is something new!” Maomao was downright moved to experience something she never had before. It felt a bit like being bitten by a highly venomous snake. And there was a poisonous herb she’d eaten once that had given her nausea like this—which one was it, again? She was enjoying searching her memory for it.

It hurts my heart so deeply to feel as if all the efforts of my friend,—who has supported me so much by helping with translations, lettering, and sharing news on X—have vanished into nothing. My SNS manga, Sunday’s Momonga shared about 55 pages on X, but in truth, I have drawn 140 pages over the past year. I believed X was the only place where this work could be released, shared with readers around the world, and enjoyed together. To see that place collapse breaks my heart. But what hurts the most is the screaming that keeps echoing inside my head. A long time ago, I watched myself and my fellow artists in Korea—people who had done nothing wrong—being taken from, attacked, and humiliated. I watched what happened to their lives and their dreams. As for my own life, I lived through it myself. Those wounds still bleed, even after decades. They will never heal—not until the day I die. Until the very last second of my life, they will keep bleeding.
