This kind of work is often used as an excuse not to fund art programs, because it’s such an easy target. So when we find ourselves promoting or defending it, above the countless other things we should be promoting and defending, ... we’re acting against our own best interests. Instead, as artists and art fans, I think we should all be prepared to acknowledge that some art is dumb, without letting the dumb stuff become the public-facing representation of the entire art world. If an artist has to talk or write a big pile of words before anyone "gets" their art enough to like it, I think they’re mainly a writer. Any work into which we truly dedicate ourselves can resonate at its own magical frequency, and has the potential to reach others and connect them in common resonance. The internet once promised ... a level playing field where ideas could compete based on their merit and everyone had an equal chance to access a worldwide audience. This paradigm arguably existed for about four minutes in 1993, but then it vanished into the ether along with Jamiroquai’s hat and the Oscar aspirations of Weekend at Bernie’s II. Perhaps it’s still possible to level that playing field again, if we all carefully curated our social media feeds to allow more individual creators and fewer multinational corporations ... If we like the idea of supporting “smaller” artists, we have to go out of our way to do it, because it takes effort to fight the gravitational pull of systems that favor the big folks. The world gets better when we consciously support “small” creators.
